SCSRL Researcher Receives INBIOSIS CBR Grant Award 2026

Text

Christal Winona Clyde from the Suntar-CAMS Sustainability Research Laboratory (SCSRL) has been selected as a recipient of the INBIOSIS CBR Grant Award 2026, presented during the International Symposium on Synthetic Biology and CRISPR Technology (iSynBioCT 2026), hosted by INBIOSIS, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), on 22–23 September 2026.

The award was presented in conjunction with the inaugural Engine.Bio@INBIOSIS 2026 programme and supports a Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS) project through the INBIOSIS Centre for Bioinformatics Research (CBR).

The awarded project, “Metagenome-Assembled Genomes (MAGs) from South China Sea Deep-Sea Sediments”, will investigate the hidden microbial diversity of deep-sea sediments using shotgun metagenomics. By sequencing environmental DNA directly, the project aims to reconstruct Metagenome-Assembled Genomes (MAGs) and access genomic resources from microorganisms that are difficult to cultivate using conventional laboratory methods.

The project is led by Dr. Steven Aw Yoong Kit as Principal Investigator, with Prof. Dr. Yeap Swee Keong as Co-Investigator. The research aims to facilitate the discovery of novel metabolic pathways, biocatalysts, industrial enzymes, and natural products with potential applications in biotechnology and industry.

The INBIOSIS CBR Grant Award supports one Whole-Genome Sequencing (WGS) project and provides access to INBIOSIS sequencing services, hands-on genomics techniques, bioinformatics analysis, and a complete project report to support research and publication.

Congratulations to Dr. Steven Aw Yoong Kit, Prof. Dr. Yeap Swee Keong and Christal Winona Clyde on this achievement. We look forward to seeing this research uncover new possibilities in deep-sea microbial exploration and biotechnology.
