XMUM Chemical Engineering Students Win Second Prize at MSTW22 Case Study Challenge

Published on September 2, 2022

In a team of four, a group of undergraduate students from the Chemical Engineering programme, Xiamen University Malaysia bagged the second prize at MSTW22 Case Study Challenge under the theme Sustainable Energy.

The four students from Chemical Engineering programme -  Jocelyn Lim Jean Yi, Leiu Yu Xuan, Silvanir and Yeow Teck Ann - made a pitch in title “Hydrogen Production via Biomass Gasification in Supercritical Water Using Semi-Transparent-Organic Solar Cells Powered Microalgae System”. Out of 18 teams, only 5 teams were shortlisted for the final and only 76 hours were given to wrap up the presentation.

The team proposed a supercritical water gasification (SCWG) process powered by a semi-transparent-organic solar cell (ST-OSC) system, which was further embedded with microalgae cultivation facilities for carbon capture and conversion. Both ST-OSC and microalgae cultivation facilities would be installed under the same greenhouse for better land utilization. The greenhouse would allow the penetration of sunlight through the ST-OSC, which was installed at the rooftop for both photochemical reactions (by ST-OSC) and photosynthesis (by microalgae).
