“Sustainable Growth and Intellectual Property” Forum (IP 2024) Concludes Successfully in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
The Intellectual Property and Innovation Research Centre (IPIRC), Xiamen University Malaysia, successfully hosted the “Sustainable Growth and Intellectual Property” forum in Kuala Lumpur on 20 May 2024, in collaboration with the Asian International Arbitration Centre (Malaysia) (AIAC), the Intellectual Property Research Institute (IPRI), Xiamen University, and the Belt and Road Research Institute (BRRI), Xiamen University). Following the IP 2023 Forum on “Intellectual Property and Innovation under the RCEP Framework: Opportunities for Cooperation”, this is the second forum (IP 2024) in the IPIRC’s annual forum series on intellectual property, and the event received supported from Fidelity Law Firm, Gan & Zul Advocates & Solicitors, Halim Hong & Quek Advocates & Solicitors, and Trademark2u Sdn. Bhd.
Over 120 participants from Malaysia, Singapore, China, and other countries attended the forum, representing both academia and industry. After the opening ceremony, the forum notably featured the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Xiamen University Law School and the Asian International Arbitration Centre (Malaysia) (AIAC). Four plenary sessions followed, with key themes including “ADR, Collaboration and IP,” “Innovation and Intellectual Property,” “ESG and Intellectual Property,” and “Frontier Technologies and IP,” where speakers and panelists discussed cutting-edge topics. A short closing ceremony concluded the forum in the main auditorium of AIAC.
Opening Ceremony
Dr. Li Jing, Assistant Professor at the IPRI, Xiamen University, hosted the opening ceremony, where Prof. Zhang Ying, Vice-President of Xiamen University Malaysia, Prof. Cheryl Xiaoning Long, Director of the IPIRC, Xiamen University Malaysia, and “Cheung Kong Scholar” Professor, Xiamen University, as well as Mr. Danesh Chandran, Assistant Director of the AIAC, gave speeches to warmly welcome all attendees of the meeting.
MOU Signing Ceremony
One of the highlights of the event was the MOU signing ceremony, where Prof. Zhu Xiaoqin, Vice Dean of Xiamen University Law School, and Mr. Danesh Chandran, Assistant Director of the AIAC, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on behalf of their respective institutions, with Prof. Lin Xiuqin, Dean of IPRI at Xiamen University, and Mr. Bryan Richard, Head of Business Development at the AIAC, as the witnesses. Both institutions look forward to further strengthening their exchanges and cooperation to contribute to the training of legal professionals with global outlook and international expertise.

Plenary Sessions
Session 1: ADR, Collaboration and IP
The session was chaired by Mr. Gan Ping Sieu, Founder and Senior Partner of Gan & Zul Advocates & Solicitors. Prof. Liu Kung-Chung from Yong Pung How School of Law, Singapore Management University gave a presentation on “Arbitration on FRAND Licensing of SEPs by SSOs,” and the speech title of Mr. Vishnu Menon, International Case Counsel of the AIAC, is “Exploring the Use of ADR for Resolving Intellectual Property Disputes.” Additionally, Ms. Cindy Goh Joo Seong, Partner at Cheang & Ariff Advocates & Solicitors and Chairperson of the Malaysian Bar IP Committee, shared insights on the role of arbitration in IP disputes.

Session 2: Innovation and Intellectual Property
Chaired by Mr. Lawrence Yip, CEO of Trademark2u Sdn. Bhd., this session featured Prof. Rohazar Wati Bt Zuallcobley from the Faculty of Law, University of Technology MARA (Universiti Teknologi MARA) and Dr. Noor Suhaida Kasri from the Islamic Economy Department at ISRA Research Management Centre, INCEIF University. They discussed “Navigating the Current Challenges in Intellectual Property Protection in Malaysia” and “Financing Intellectual Property: The Experience of Islamic Banks in Malaysia,” respectively.

Session 3: ESG and Intellectual Property
Hosted by Dr. Dong Huijuan, Associate Professor at the IPRI, Xiamen University, the presentation section in this session featured Prof. Zinatul Ashiqin Zainol of the Faculty of Law, National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), presenting “Green Trademark and Sustainability”; Prof. Zhu Xiaoqin, Vice Dean of Xiamen University Law School, presenting “ESG Regulation and the Rise of Electric Vehicles in China”; and Mr. Guo Chenhui, Partner at GEN Law Firm, discussing “Protecting Your Brand: Strategies Against Trademark Infringement and Counterfeiting.”

Subsequently, Mr. Eugene Roy Joseph, Founder of Joseph Chambers Law Firm, moderated a panel discussion with the theme “ESG and IP: Navigating Innovation and Sustainability”. The panelists included Prof. Liu Kung-Chung, Prof. Cheryl Xiaoning Long, and Dr. Qi Jun Kwong from Nagoya University, who heatedlly debated the latest challenges in the field.
Session 4: Frontier Technologies and IP
Dr. Wang Jun, Associate Professor at the IPRI, Xiamen University, chaired the presentation section of this session, which featured presentations by Mr. Xu Ran, GM of Xiaomi IP Strategy, on “Better Life Through Innovation”; Mr. Guo Mingkun, Senior Partner at Fidelity Law Firm, on “China’s Practices on Data Capitalization and Cross-border Data Flows”; and Mr. Lo Khai Yi, Co-Head of the Technology Practice Group at Halim Hong & Quek Advocates & Solicitors, on “Intellectual Property and AI Generated Output.”

The session concluded with a panel discussion on “Innovating the Future: Frontier Technologies and Intellectual Property,” moderated by Prof. Cheryl Xiaoning Long. The panel discussants included Mr. Xu Ran, Prof. Lin Xiuqin, and Mr. Lawrence Tan, Managing Director of IP Gennesis Sdn. Bhd., who engaged in comprehensive discussion on the future of IP and technology.
Closing Ceremony
In the closing ceremony, Prof. Cheryl Xiaoning Long expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all participants and the organizing team, and invited all to continuously engage in the forum series and provide support for the development of Xiamen University Malaysia.
