XMUM Co-Hosts Three International Conferences with IEREK

During 3-5 December 2021, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) has successfully co-hosted three international conferences - the 4th Edition of the Future and Smart Cities, Resilient and Responsible Architecture & Urbanism, the 7th Edition of the Earth Observation for Environmental Changes and the 9th Edition of the Geo-information Technologies for Natural Disaster Management - under the theme “Chances, Challenges & Changes in Environmental Enhancement”.

In collaboration with International Experts for Research Enrichment and Knowledge Exchange (IEREK), these events aim to contribute to “Bridging the Geospatial Digital Divide in Support of 2030 SDGs” by offering an interdisciplinary forum for enhancing research and innovation as well as promoting knowledge exchange.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Dr. Geetha Kanaparan, the Assistant Dean of XMUM School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and featured speeches by several distinguished speakers, including:
- Prof. Jonathan Li Jun, the Conference Chair & Dean of XMUM School of Electrical and Computer Engineering; 
- Prof. Saeid Pirasteh, the Conference Co-Chair & Head of GeoAI Smarter Map and LiDAR Lab, Southwest Jiaotong University, China;
- Assoc. Prof. Zhang Ying, XMUM Assistant President;
- Dr. Mourad Amer, President and CEO of IEREK.

Opening ceremony 

After an introductory session chaired by Prof. Wang Hui-Qiong, Director of Research Management Centre, XMUM, 5 sessions covering topics ranging from smart cities, resiliency, earth observation, to geo-information technology were conducted during the 3-day period. The conferences contain a total of 34 presentations by academics and industry experts from more than 10 institutions, including Xiamen University, University of Bradford, University of New Brunswick, Chongqing University, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, University of Perugia, and Xiamen University Malaysia.
