Ong Jin Poh: You Know Him for Mathematics but He Led an Orchestra Too

Published on February 5, 2026

At the 2025 Commencement Ceremony of Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), Ong Jin Poh from the Department of Mathematics was invited to deliver a speech as a student representative.

For many, Ong Jin Poh is known for his academic excellence. Yet beyond the classroom, he holds another identity - a Chinese orchestra conductor who has actively shaped campus cultural life throughout his undergraduate years.

Ong Jin Poh's involvement in Chinese music began during his secondary school years when he first encountered the soprano sheng. Captivated by its distinctive tone, he gradually developed a strong interest in Chinese orchestral music.

His teacher later recommended him to take on the role of student conductor. However, the transition was far from easy. Conducting required not only musical technique, but also a broader perspective, coordination, and clear communication with musicians.

Facing difficulties during rehearsals, Ong Jin Poh began to doubt his own abilities.

Thus, after joining Yanan Chinese Orchestra at XMUM, he chose to temporarily step away from conducting and focus on performing as a musician. Through observing how the orchestra operated and working alongside dedicated members, he gradually rebuilt his confidence.

Encouraged by the supportive environment and the passion of fellow musicians, Ong Jin Poh eventually decided to return to the conductor's podium.

As the student conductor of Yanan Chinese Orchestra, Ong Jin Poh took on the responsibility of guiding the ensemble's musical direction. Beyond learning conducting techniques, he focused on musical interpretation and effective rehearsal strategies.

One of the most memorable milestones was the orchestra's concert titled Unveiling. During preparations, Ong Jin Poh worked closely with different sections of the orchestra - discussing arrangements, marking key passages in the scores, and refining dynamics and tempo.

The concert was successfully held, where Ong conducted pieces including Flying Dragon and Leaping Tiger and A Man Must Strengthen Himself. The positive response from the audience marked a significant moment in his musical journey.

Following the concert, the orchestra strengthened collaborations with universities and music groups, building networks for exchange and joint performances.

Motivated by these experiences, Ong participated in exchanges with other institutions, including activities organised by Tsinghua University's Chinese Orchestra.

In July 2025, he joined the International Youth Chinese Music Exchange Camp, where students from different cultural backgrounds collaborated through music.

He also performed as a guest alto sheng player at concerts hosted by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Sungai Long Campus), maintaining connections with musicians across Malaysia.

Alongside his musical commitments, Ong Jin Poh remained dedicated to his academic development, graduating with an impressive CGPA of 3.94 in Mathematics.

Aware of the demanding nature of his programme, he spent his first year focusing on adapting to university studies before gradually becoming involved in student organisations. He later served as the President for the student union of Department of Mathematics.

During his term, Ong Jin Poh organised academic talks, learning support sessions, and communication platforms between students and lecturers to address academic challenges. Several of these initiatives have continued after his graduation, benefiting subsequent cohorts.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Ong Jin Poh chose to continue at XMUM as a postgraduate student in Mathematics. Although entering a new academic stage, he remains connected to Yanan Chinese Orchestra and continues to offer support whenever possible.

Reflecting on his university years, Ong Jin Poh shared that his greatest gain was learning how to express himself, listen to others, and build lasting friendships.

To younger students, he offered a simple message:

"Stay passionate, and use your enthusiasm and care to inspire those around you."
