XMUM Enhances TCM Clinical Training through Main Campus Collaboration
From 19 to 20 September 2024, faculty from School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) visited Xiamen University main campus (XMU) and its affiliated Xiang’an Hospital. The visit aimed to support TCM students in their internships and enhance collaboration in clinical teaching between the two campuses.
On the first day, a symposium was held for 45 Malaysia campus intern students at XMUM School of Medicine. Prof. Sun Xiaozhong from XMU TCM Department led the session, which focused on guiding and supporting the interns during their hospital placements.
Prof. Chen Shaodong, Dean of the Malaysia campus, encouraged students to maximize their learning opportunities and maintain a strong academic approach to build essential clinical skills. Assoc. Prof. Kim Yun Jin, Head of TCM Programme at XMUM, emphasized the value of working in a cross-cultural medical environment, noting the impact on both clinical expertise and communication abilities.
Dr. Chep Lee Lu Siang, Clinical Internship Coordinator at XMUM, provided an overview of internship arrangements and addressed student concerns, while highlighting the importance of professional conduct. The symposium concluded with an interactive session where students shared their internship experiences. Certificates were awarded to those who passed the pre-internship competency exam.
On the second day, the focus shifted to improving TCM clinical teaching and internship models. The Malaysia faculty held discussions with Xiang’an Hospital’s Director of Education, Prof. Cheng Jidong, to explore ways to enhance clinical education and strengthen cooperation. A tour of the hospital’s facilities followed, where the delegation viewed departments including pediatrics, gynecology, and neurology.
This visit further solidified the partnership between the Malaysia campus and Xiamen University, enhancing internship opportunities and fostering cross-cultural adaptability. By strengthening collaboration, students will gain structured, high-quality clinical experience, laying a solid foundation for their future careers.
