Meet Our New Faculty Members! | Wang Peiming: I want to "do something" at XMUM
In March 2023, Wang Peiming became a Professor at the School of Economics and Management, Xiamen University Malaysia. With 29 years of teaching experience under his belt, Wang's academic journey started in Shanghai, China.
Wang Peiming earned a master's degree in Systems Engineering from the Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering in 1989, and another master's degree in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Toronto. Subsequently, he pursued his PhD at the UBC Sauder School of Business, Canada's top-ranked business school, and graduated in 1994.

After completing his studies, Wang's career led him to Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Explaining his choice, Wang said, "When I was studying at UBC, many of my classmates were senior tutors who came from NTU, sponsored by the Singaporean government. Then the Singapore Economic Development Board came to Sauder for recruitment, and offered me a job as a faculty member at NTU. Besides, I loved the warm climate in Southeast China."
Ambition played a significant role in his decision as well. NTU, with government support, was embarking on a journey to establish itself, and Wang saw an opportunity to contribute. During his time at NTU, he excelled in both teaching and research while actively participating in curriculum development.
After over a decade at NTU, Wang and his family embarked on a new chapter in 2007, relocating to New Zealand. He joined the Auckland University of Technology (AUT), the youngest and fastest-growing national university in New Zealand.
“Auckland is a nice place with a pleasant environment and kind people. It’s suitable for academic research.” Wang said.
Wang remained at AUT for a full sixteen years. In 2023, he once again stepped out of his comfort zone, this time joining Xiamen University Malaysia.

Wang Peiming and his family
His decision was influenced by family considerations, and he saw potential in contributing to the young institution's development: “My mother lived alone in Shanghai, and my wife’s family is in Singapore. Therefore, Malaysia’s location is convenient for us to take care of our families. Besides, XMUM is a young institution where I believe I can make some difference. I want to apply my experience to support the construction of the university.”
In his current role, Wang primarily teaches courses related to his research interests, which include 'Business and the Economy of China' and 'Financial Technology.'
He explained: "My research areas included applied econometrics, asset pricing theory, and monetary policy. Recently, I've shifted my focus to financial technology, a hot topic in recent years. We need to explore how virtual and digital currencies will impact the monetary system and asset valuation, which requires further research."
Looking ahead, Wang Peiming is gearing up to collaborate with colleagues on in-depth research in areas like green finance, environmental protection, and sustainable development. He plans to leverage Xiamen University's database to identify research topics closely related to Southeast Asia.
Xiamen University Malaysia shares Wang's vision of a university that emphasizes both teaching and research. He emphasized, "For a young university, teaching is crucial. The School of Economics and Management is currently working on introducing a master’s program and improving the curriculum framework. With students from around the world, the college must consider the diverse backgrounds and needs of students in course design."
Wang's teaching approach places significant emphasis on real-life case studies, encouraging students to go beyond the textbook. He has invited entrepreneurs and industry experts to share their experiences, providing students with insights into current industry trends.
