The Research Management Center congratulates Assistant Prof. Dr. Yang Junjie from XMUM School of Economics and Management on publishing the paper “Double Trouble: Containing Public Disapproval Arising from an Interplay of Stigmatized Categories” as the corresponding author. This paper is published in Journal of Management Studies, a SSCI Q1 journal with an impact factor of 7.388 and one of Financial Times’s Top 50 Journals.

This paper is authored by 4 researchers affiliated with Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Nankai University (China), Xiamen University Malaysia, and Monetary Authority of Singapore, respectively. 

This study addresses the question of how interplays of stigmatized categories might trigger public disapproval and stigma response strategies. The authors develop two categories: possession of network ties with home-country governments and market entry into salient industries in target nations. Based on a comparative study of four Chinese firms’ acquisitions in the United States and Australia, the results show that (1) firms face different levels of disapproval amid differing interplays of the stigmatized categories and that (2) each firm adopts a distinctive response strategy. The study contributes to the organizational stigma literature by theorizing about the relationships of categories’ interplays, disapproval levels, and stigma responses. It also adds to the embeddedness perspective by providing an argument for the socio-political liabilities of strong ties, as well as contributes to international business studies on exploring a theme of geopolitics and stigmatization of firms.

Dr. Yang Junjie is an Assistant Professor at School of Economics and Management (SEM), Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM). He was jointly trained by Nankai University (China) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and received his PhD degree in Management. Before he joined XMUM, he worked as a research fellow at Asian Business Case Centre, Nanyang Business School, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is also an Adjunct Research Fellow at Center for Belt & Road Economic Development Research, Shandong University of Finance and Economics, China, and Adjunct Research Fellow at Business School, Northwest Normal University, China.
