Nadira & Suren: A Shared Vision Behind the Classroom Success

Published on June 3, 2024

"Ms. Nadira and Mr. Suren? Oh, they are very close with students, also a pair of tacit partners!" said a group of Advertising students.

Ms. Nur Nadira Bashir and Mr. Surendev Singh A/L Ranjeet Singh, known as Nadira and Suren, are both experienced lecturers from the Advertising Department at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM). Since joining XMUM in 2019, they've been known as the dynamic duo for their mutual professionalism, complementary personalities, and unwavering commitment to students.

Although they don't always agree on everything, their long-time collaboration is anchored by one shared principle: "Students' interest is the priority."

Before joining XMUM, both lecturers had built successful careers in the advertising industry. With years of hands-on experience in design, copywriting, and brand strategy, they've worked on numerous award-winning projects. These real-world insights now enrich their classroom teachings.

Nadira, who previously worked in New Zealand and Malaysia, transitioned into education after discovering a deep connection with students during a guest lecture. "I saw the spark of curiosity - that inspired my passion for teaching," she said.

Suren, raised in an educational family, shares a similar story. "Teaching is in my blood," he smiled. For him, becoming a lecturer was the perfect way to merge his creative expertise with his love for mentoring.

Both joined XMUM on the same day - 18 February 2019. Drawn by the university's inclusive culture and practical approach to education, they quickly found a sense of belonging. "We were impressed by the diversity of the community and the emphasis on both theory and practice," Suren recalled.

Their partnership grew naturally through years of course planning, brainstorming, and mentoring students. Nadira describes it as built gradually through daily conversation and collaboration, while Suren refers to it using the "Yin" and "Yang" concept - two personalities that seem opposite but complement each other to form a strong whole.

Each brings unique strengths to the classroom - Nadira is known for her detail-oriented and structured approach, while Suren brings spontaneity and energy. Together, they co-teach key modules like Communication Campaign and Final Year Project Exhibition, where their collaboration inspires creativity and critical thinking.

Nadira and Suren are very close with their students.

"They always encourage us to brainstorm and spark our creativity within limitations," said Advertising alumna Ng Ee Vien, "Their classes are interactive and engaging."

Cherie Ong, a current FYP student, shared: "Ms. Nadira's feedback is always straight to the point. Every consultation feels insightful."

Suren's lively classroom presence also leaves a strong impression. "I'm the fun-maker among my friends, and I bring that energy into teaching," he said. While known for his humor, students also respect his emphasis on professionalism and deadlines.

Their strong rapport and student-centered mindset have earned them consistently high rankings in the "Most Popular Lecturers" list at XMUM. When asked why students connect with them, Nadira responded with a smile: "I didn't intend to be close with my students - but maybe the nature of my teaching just fosters that bond."

Suren added, "We're passionate about what we do, and we look forward to seeing our impact."

Looking ahead, the duo is planning to co-author a research paper - further extending their partnership beyond the classroom. As Nadira puts it: "This friendship and collaboration - it's still here, and it will never die."
