On the 23rd and 24th of September, about 800 local and international students attended an orientation organized by the staff, faculty, and students of Xiamen University Malaysia. This orientation, which was aptly themed “Second Home”, was co-sponsored by two multinational conglomerates, namely AirAsia and China Construction Bank Malaysia (CCBM).

The event kicked off on the 23rd with a rousing speech by the co-chairpersons of the orientation – Mr. Jerald Ho Wei Cheng and Mr. Zhang Xiang Yu. After this quick welcome session, the students were grouped and ushered into different classes by their team facilitators. Participants enjoyed bonding with their teammates and facilitators through information sharing sessions and activities.

The following morning, students were briefed by the various departments of the University regarding their courses, procedures, and other important information. The event then continued with a game session which lasted throughout the afternoon with 32 teams competing for prizes given to the top 6 winning teams.

At 7pm, the long awaited closing ceremony began. This ceremony was attended by the President of Xiamen University Malaysia – Professor Wang Rui Fang, Assistant President of Xiamen University Malaysia – Dr. Zhang Ying, a representative of China Construction Bank Malaysia – Mr. Edward, and the senior manager of Student Affairs – Mr. Elvin. The ceremony began with a speech by Professor Wang, in which he welcomed all freshmen with inspiring words, and emphasized the importance of the English language in tertiary education. His speech was followed by a talk given by the co-chairpersons Mr. Jerald Ho and Mr. Zhang. Then a token of appreciation was presented to Mr. Edward, the representative of CCBM.

During the ceremony, several clubs and individuals presented exciting performances. All of the performances were well-received by the audience, with each performance getting more applause than the previous. The whole ceremony then came to an end around 9.30 pm, which also marked the end of the orientation.

This orientation was a great success and garnered much positive feedback from attendees. Many students expressed their satisfaction towards the whole event, and felt confident and assured in their upcoming campus life.
