Biography
Ir. Dr Ab Halim Abu Bakar received the B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom (1976), followed by the M.Eng. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (1996 and 2003, respectively).
He brings 30 years of industrial experience with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) to his academic career. He was a Professor with the UM Power Energy Dedicated Advanced Centre (UMPEDAC), University of Malaya, Malaysia. He is an established academician and a practical engineer.
He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE), a Chartered Engineer (United Kingdom), and a Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate (PEPC) in Malaysia.
To date, he has published 95 ISI (Web of Science) indexed journal papers, 151 Scopus indexed journal papers, and 47 papers in international conference proceedings. He has successfully supervised 19 Ph.D. candidates, 5 Master by Research (B.Eng.Sci.), 1 Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.), and 73 Master by Coursework (M. Eng) projects.
His Web of Science H-index is 36, and Scopus H-index is 40. He was listed among the Top 2% Scientists in the world in their respective fields by Stanford University in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
Ir. Dr. Ab Halim has won several prestigious awards during his professional and academic career. In 2008, he received the IEEE PES Malaysian Chapter Outstanding Engineering Award and Contribution Award MNC CIGRE
His research interests include power system protection and power system transients.
