XMUM Presents ChemVerse Project at Meta Reality Labs Roundtable on Immersive Learning
Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) was invited to participate in a roundtable discussion hosted by Meta Reality Labs, Asia Pacific, along with its partners. The event, held on 24 July 2025 at the Connexion Conference & Event Centre (CCEC), brought together representatives from Meta, the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the Ministry of Education (MOE), and other stakeholders from government, academia, and industry to discuss the role of immersive technologies in education and workforce development.
XMUM delivered a presentation titled "ChemVerse: A Local Immersive Learning Success Story”, which focused on the development of ChemVerse Academy - a virtual reality platform designed to support the teaching and learning of chemical engineering and laboratory skills.
The ChemVerse Academy project is led by Assistant Professor Dr. Noraini Mohd from the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering. It is supported by funding from the Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST), an agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). This is the second research grant awarded to Dr. Noraini at XMUM.
The project team also includes:
- Dr. Ahmad Affandi Zulkapli, Lecturer, School of Computing and Data Science, XMUM
- Mr. Mohd Zulhelmy Ahmad, Laboratory Officer, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, XMUM
- Dr. Valarmathie Gopalan, Lecturer, School of Creative Industry Management and Performing Arts, Universiti Utara Malaysia
The team brings together expertise in chemical engineering, computing, virtual design, and education to create an interdisciplinary approach to immersive learning.
"ChemVerse Academy demonstrates how immersive learning can be applied in technical education to improve access and engagement," said Dr. Noraini.
The invitation reflects interest in ChemVerse Academy as a potential model for integrating extended reality (XR) into curriculum delivery, in line with broader efforts to enhance education through digital tools.
