XMUM Collaborates with TNB Research on Carbon Capture Project
The Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Technologies for Agricultural Advancement and a Zero-Waste Economy (STARGAZE) at Xiamen University Malaysia has been appointed by TNB Research as the consultancy team for a Biogenic Carbon Capture and Utilisation (Bio-CCU) project, which officially commenced with a kick-off meeting held on 17 April 2026.
The project focuses on the design and evaluation of a Bio-CCU system linked to a TNB gas power plant. Bio-CCU is an approach that captures carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions and converts them into useful bio-based products as part of broader efforts to support lower-carbon energy solutions.
Led by Tan Jian Ping, the XMUM consultancy team comprises nine researchers with expertise in process engineering, bioprocess technology, and environmental assessment.
The project is supported by an existing pilot facility with a processing capacity of approximately 1.5 tonnes. During the kick-off meeting, representatives from TNB Research and XMUM visited the pilot plant site to discuss system operations, technical integration, and future development plans.
The collaboration provides opportunities for XMUM researchers and students to engage in industry-related projects involving process engineering, simulation, and biochemical systems, while gaining exposure to practical engineering applications and real-world challenges.
