NESE Postgraduate Students Win Gold and Silver Medals in Malaysian National Nanotechnology Olympiad Competition 2022
The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates postgraduate students Eugene Ling Wei Hong and Khor Yohanz from School of Energy and Chemical Engineering for being awarded Gold and Silver medals, respectively, in the Malaysian National Nanotechnology Olympiad (ONM) Competition 2022.
Both projects have been conducted under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Chong Su Sin.
Held from 23 to 29 October 2022 by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI) Malaysia, the theme of the competition this year is “Nanotechnology for Energy Generation and Storage Application”. This event aims to increase the knowledge and understanding of university students in nanotechnology.
Eugene Ling Hong Weng attained the best team award and ranked first place among all the gold medal recipients. He presented a topic entitled “Sustainable future through palm oil biowaste-derived graphene for photodegradation and hydrogen photocatalysis production in palm oil mill effluent”, which aims to reuse the waste produced from the palm oil extraction process into useful green hydrogen through the hybridization of photodegradation and photocatalysis technique, while reducing the pollution for a better environment.
Now, Eugene Ling Hong Weng is eligible to be selected by MOSTI to participate in the upcoming International Nanotechnology Olympiad (INO) Competition 2023 in the Sultanate of Oman.
Khor Yohanz, a year-2 postgraduate student in New Energy Science and Engineering, has been awarded silver medals in this competition for two consecutive years. In line with the competition theme, Khor Yohanz presented his topic on “Hybrid-Aqueous Lithium-Air Battery System for Military Application”, with the purposes of fabricating and commercializing a safe, durable and low-price-performance-ratio-based battery system for both military use and civilian use.
“It is such a nice chance to gain new knowledge on nanotechnology and experience the way to work with others as a team,” said Eugene Ling Hong Weng, “I really appreciate my team members for all our effort and time to complete such an impressive project, and my supervisor Dr. Chong Su Sin for her support and encouragement.”
Khor Yohanz also said: “ONM is very fruitful where knowledge is not the only factor for winning but also the ability to socialize and cooperate with others. Furthermore, the availability of physical visits and talks also enriched me with knowledge of the current nanotechnology and green technology status of the world, especially Malaysia, in both industrial and academic fields.”
