The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) on 25 October 2022 to facilitate the registration of graduate engineers from XMUM as Graduate Engineers.

Under the MoU, the bachelor’s graduates of Chemical Engineering Programme and Electrical and Electronics Engineering will be registered in batches with BEM more quickly and effectively. The University also received an RM10,000 award contribution for outstanding engineering graduates for a period of five years.

BEM is a statutory body established under the Engineers Registration Act 1967, with the primary goals of facilitating Engineer registration and regulating the professional conduct & practice of registered persons to safeguard the public's safety and interest.

Assoc. Prof. Zhang Ying, the Vice President of Xiamen University Malaysia, presented at the signing ceremony as the University representative. The event was officiated by YBhg. Dato' Seri Ir. Haji Mohamad Zulkefly bin Sulaiman, the President and board member of BEM.

In Malaysia, a university engineering graduate is required to register as a Graduate Engineer under the Registration of Engineers Act 1967 (Revised 2015) if he or she wants to practise professional engineering services.

The identity of Graduate Engineer will also allow the graduates to register with engineering professional regulatory bodies in all 29 Washington Accord signatory countries, including Malaysia, China, Singapore, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom. It signifies that the programmes have met the academic requirements for professional engineering practice.

Prof. Wang Han (Dean of School of Electrical Engineering & Artificial Intelligence), Ir. Dr. Liew Chia Pao (Head of Internal QA for EAC Programmes, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering) and Ir. Dr. Ban Zhen Hong (Head of Chemical Engineering Bachelor Programme) also attended the ceremony.
