News of 2019 at XMUM
1. XMUM Undergraduate Student Publishes in Q1-Indexed Journal as First Author
Second-year undergraduate student Ren Yijie and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun, both from the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, have successfully published the paper entitled “Interfacial engineering of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based metal sulfide heterojunction photocatalysts for energy conversion: A review”, as first author and corresponding author respectively. This paper was published on 5 March 2019 in Chinese Journal of Catalysis, an international peer reviewed Q1 journal which ranks among the top 25% within its subject category.
2. XMUM Launches MBA and MA in Chinese Studies
The first two postgraduate programmes of XMUM - Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Arts in Chinese Studies - welcomed their pioneer batches of students in April and September 2019 respectively. With the newly recruited postgraduate students, XMUM now boasts a total student enrollment of over 5,000 students, including 40% international students from 27 different countries and regions.
3. First Campus Career Fair Held at XMUM
XMUM held its very first campus career fair on 9 May 2019, which attracted 45 leading companies from a wide range of industries to participate. Over 300 employment opportunities and over 100 internship placements were provided to XMUM students. Exhibitors at the career fair include many well-known multinational corporations, such as Deloitte, Ernst & Young and DHL Express, as well as reputable Chinese enterprises like China State Construction, Vivo and Yon You.
4. Xiamen University Research Vessel Tan Kah Kee Open Ship Days Successfully Held
The Open Ship Days on board Research Vessel Tan Kah Kee was successfully held at Boustead Cruise Center, Port Klang, Malaysia on 17 & 18 August 2019. Jointly organized by Xiamen University and XMUM, this is the first time that a Chinese scientific research vessel opens to the Malaysian public free of charge. The open day event attracted about 1,000 participants from all walks of life.
5. 3 XMUM Faculty Members Receive 2019 MOE Research Fund
Three XMUM Faculty members - Dr. Ng Kim Hoong from School of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Kelvin Ooi Jian Aun from School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Dr. Teoh Hong Wooi from China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences - received the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) 2019 with a total allocated amount of RM 350,789.00, which were awarded by the Ministry of Education (MOE) Malaysia. They are the second batch of successful FRGS applications submitted by XMUM.
6. New Campus Facilities Put into Use
On 22 September 2019, Gala Night - a welcome party for 1909 intake students - was held on the brand-new Music Island. A lakeside stage capable of accommodating over 800 audience, the Music Island serves as a perfect venue for events and all kinds of student activities. Other campus facilities that have been put into use this year include the new Auditorium (music hall with over 600 seats), a new canteen and several high-rise student hostels, providing more study and living space for the university staff and students.
7. Inaugural Convocation Celebrated at XMUM
XMUM held its Inaugural Convocation Ceremony in the newly furbished Auditorium on 28 September 2019. 371 graduands - consisting of 242 students from Malaysia and 129 from China - were conferred bachelor's degree of Xiamen University (XMU) by Prof. Zhang Rong, President of XMU. February 2016 intake Malaysian graduands enjoyed outstanding employment prospects, as most of them have been recruited by industry-leading companies, such as Deloitte, PwC, Huawei, Sinchew Media, Maybank, Citibank, UOB and ICBC. Among the graduands from China, more than 70% went on to pursue further studies in UK, Australia, US, and other countries and regions.
8. XMUM Students Excel in Entrepreneurship & Innovation Competitions
XMUM students have achieved outstanding results in several entrepreneurship and innovation competitions in the past year, including 16 prizes in the 1st China-Malaysia Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, Grand Prize in China “AI+” College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, 4 Bronze Prizes in the 5th China College Students’ Internet Plus Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and the First Prize in the 2nd National College Student Tourism Design Competition, etc.
9. Cashless Payment Now Available at XMUM
Since 1 December 2019, XMUM has become a cashless campus. Now e-payment system is supported at B1 supermarket, as well as at all the stalls in D6 canteen, LY3 canteen and B1-GF. Students and staff can top up their campus card online and pay with the balance, which makes the payment more convenient and eco-friendly. Currently, XMUM campus card serves multiple functions, including equipment access, library card, cashless payment and identification.
10. XMUM Makes Further Progress in International Cooperation
Four world-recognized universities - Australia National University, Newcastle University, Cardiff University, Victoria University of Wellington - have established or deepened their cooperation with XMUM in 2019 by signing Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). With the purpose of creating postgraduate pathways for students and facilitating students and faculty exchange, XMUM has been exploring constructive partnerships with universities worldwide. Currently, XMUM has established cooperation with 11 partner universities in US, UK, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand.
