First Joint Energy Science & Engineering Forum
The Joint Energy Science and Engineering Forum has been conducted in the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University main campus on 14th June 2017. The forum provided a platform for researchers from the Xiamen University of Malaysia (XMUM) campus to interact with those from the main campus.

The event was officiated with an opening speech by Professor Chen Binhui, who emphasized the urgency of the energy crisis in our society today and the various research opportunities fueled by this problem. A handful of outstanding researchers were then given the opportunity to present their work, including XMUM’s Professor Huang Nay Ming and Associate Professor Khor Cheng Seong. In his talk, Professor Huang spoke about his research on graphene-based intermediate bifunctional electrodes, while Associate Professor Khor gave a presentation about his projects on water and energy systems.

More knowledge sharing sessions followed, with talks by Professors Guo Hang from Pen-Tung Sah Institute of Micro-Nano Science and Technology, Hong Wenjing, Zhang Qiugeng, and Zhang Hongliang. The topics covered included recent progresses in Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) by Professor Guo, to the design and manufacturing of highly permeable membranes by Professor Zhang. These topics are related to innovations in various fields such as wastewater treatment, food industry, electronics, and clean energy technologies. Needless to say, the talks were enthusiastically received.
In conjunction with the forum, the XMUM researchers were given a tour of the campus. Among the highlights were visits to the College of Energy and the prestigious Pen-Tung Sah Institute of Micro-Nano Science and Technology. The visits stimulated lively exchanges of ideas, and the forum is to be credited for its role in encouraging future collaborations.
Given the astounding success of the forum, XMUM is currently proposing the organization of a second joint forum in the near future. It is hoped that the continuous efforts to foster cooperation between the two Xiamen University campuses will elevate both institutes to leading positions in the field of energy science in the Asia-Pacific region.
