Students from the Journalism programme of Xiamen University Malaysia ventured out of campus on December 6, 2017, visiting The Star headquarters as a part of the programme’s “Beyond the Classroom” initiative.

The second-year students organised this trip together with their lecturer of the course –Advanced News Writing – Dr. Siti Suriani Othman in order to expand their horizons and take a behind-the-scenes look at what happens in the news industry in Malaysia.

This is the second event under the ‘Beyond the Classroom’ initiative of Journalism Programme that aims to boldly integrate classroom teaching with industry experience, equipping students with both theoretical and practical skills.

During the trip, students were given a comprehensive tour of the editorial floors, experiencing exactly what goes on in an industry-level newsroom.

Learning more about the history of Malaysia’s No. 1 English newspaper through the tour, students were also given the opportunity to pose questions to journalists, sub-editors and editors about 5Ws and 1H (When, Where, Who, What, Why and How) of being in the news industry.

Students came out of the trip feeling excited and awed at watching materials taught in the classroom come to life through the works of the staff at The Star.
