Deloitte Looks Forward to Strengthening Partnership with XMUM

Published on March 29, 2018

Deloitte is looking forward to further strengthening partnership with Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) and encourages more XMUM students to join Deloitte, said Deloitte Malaysia’s Chinese Services Group Leader Yee Wing Peng.

Mr Yee made the remark during a career talk held at XMUM on 27 March 2018, in which 9 Deloitte professionals and 3 XMUM interns working in tax, audit and deal advisory at Deloitte shared their working experiences and gave career advices to over 180 audiences.

“There are tons of excellent students at Xiamen University. That’s why we, the biggest consulting firm in the world, come here to look for talents,” said Mr Yee Wing Peng.

“We hope to gain continuous support from the university and give opportunities to more and more students.”

According to Mr Yee Wing Peng, China has now become the most important trading partner of Malaysia, that’s why Deloitte Malaysia and many other enterprises are trying to recruit talents with a good understanding of Chinese culture and Chinese value.

To “engage talents at the very early stage”, Deloitte Malaysia started a special internship programme and has recruited 21 XMUM students after two rounds of interviews in 2017.

Mr Yee said that he was more than satisfied with the first batch of XMUM interns and called for more students to participate in the program.

He used “unprecedented” to describe the Deloitte Internship Programme. The chosen students are granted opportunity to work as interns in Deloitte Malaysia for three or four consecutive years in various departments, including accounting, tax, audit and financial advisory.

“Then they will know what their career choice is upon graduation and achieve their life goals in maybe only ten to fifteen years,” said Mr Yee.

During the event, XMUM Assistant President Dr Zhang Ying and Dr Fan Zhiquan, the Special Advisor to XMUM President, both expressed their delight with the internship programme.

“We encourage our students to gain some working experiences while studying, so they will know the world outside while they are still in the ivory tower,” said Dr Zhang Ying.

“The cooperation is a win-win opportunity for both of us – XMUM students can improve themselves while working and Deloitte will have access to our talent resources,” Dr Fan Zhiquan added.

This programme was also deeply appreciated by the current XMUM interns in Deloitte Malaysia.

Finance sophomore Yap Wei Juen said that different from companies that only let their interns to fetch and carry, in Deloitte he has the opportunity to make serious contributions to the project and do both formal and informal communication with his client.

“The most important thing I learned throughout this internship is how to communicate with the clients and how to get along with my colleagues,” he said.

Jiang Naiyu, a second-year accounting student, added that apart from professional knowledge, she has made great improvement in language ability and communication skill and learned a lot about the local culture.

“I’ve never had a better vacation than the one in Deloitte,” Jiang summed up her time in Deloitte Malaysia in this way.
