Department of Chinese Studies Signs MoU with the Association of Kwong Tong Cemetery Management Kuala Lumpur

On 12 July 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was successfully signed between the Department of Chinese Studies, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) and the Association of Kwong Tong Cemetery Management Kuala Lumpur, marking a significant milestone in expanding off-campus partnerships and internship opportunities for the department.

MoU Signing Ceremony

At the ceremony, Prof. Wang Xiaomei, Head of the Department of Chinese Studies, delivered a speech. She warmly welcomed and expressed sincere gratitude to the delegation for their visit and for signing the MoU with the department. She encouraged students to participate in internships or employment at Kwong Tong Cemetery, highlighting further cooperation in academic and research fields in the future.

Mr. Lee Chun Kong, Vice Chairman of the Association, expressed delight at the collaboration, noting its role in connecting academia with cultural preservation efforts at Kwong Tong Cemetery. He mentioned plans to transform the cemetery into a heritage park to break stereotypes and preserve Chinese community culture.

Mr. Yong Pock Yau, Chairman of The Association of Kwong Tong Cemetery Management, mentioned a recent visit by the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, and their plan to transform the Nanyang Volunteers Memorial into the Nanyang Volunteers Memorial Park. He welcomed students to intern or work at Kwong Tong Cemetery, to jointly protect and pass on the history and culture of the Malaysian Chinese community.

During the discussion session, Chairman Yong encouraged students to assist in improving the Kwong Tong Cemetery Museum and promote Malaysian Chinese culture, and Prof. Wang Xiaomei talked about how the Department of Chinese Studies could contribute to organizing the museum and uncovering the cemetery's cultural value. Questions from undergraduates about the content and positions of internships at Kwong Tong Cemetery were also answered in detail. 

The MoU was signed by Prof. Wang Xiaomei and Mr. Yong Pock Yau, witnessed by Ms. Lee She Yun, Administrative Secretary of the Department of Chinese Studies, and Mr. Chung Wah Lieh, General Manager of Kwong Tong Cemetery.
