About the Programme

厦门大学中文专业原隶属于人文学院。学院历史悠久, 学科积淀深厚,前身系1921年创办的国文系和1926年成立的厦大国学研究院,鲁迅、林语堂等著名作家学者曾在此执教。它致力于研究中华文化的核心价值理念及优良传承,获中国教育部授予的“国家文科基础学科人才培养和科学研究基地”、“国家级精品课程”,其下的中文系、哲学系、历史系如今都已发展为独立的院系,成为中国语言、文学、历史、哲学研究教育的领跑者。

中文博士课程旨在培养具有充实专业知识、必备学术技能,并能由此开展独立研究、获得可靠成果以推动学科发展的毕业生。这是基于当今对汉语文化领域专业人才的高需求,也合乎马来西亚乃至东南亚当前就业市场对高端人力资源的需求。该课程兼使汉语母语者与非母语者受惠。其不仅引领研究生掌握中国历史、哲学、文化、 语言等方向的真知思维与前沿信息,所传递的知识,亦有助于促进人民、国家之间的相互理解,从更高层次和平解决议题。

The Chinese Studies programme at Xiamen University has a long history of scholastic excellence since its establishment in 1921. Famous scholars such as Lu Xun and Lin Yutang were once the teaching staff of this programme. It has been accorded the honour of being the "National Talents Training and Research Base for Fundamental Studies in Humanities" and the "National Quality Courses" provider by China's Ministry of Education and has evolved to become the torch-bearer in the provision of education in the fields of Chinese linguistics and literature studies.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Chinese Studies) aims to nurture graduates who have substantial knowledge of Chinese studies, essential academic skills to excel in their professional fields, and the ability to apply the knowledge and skills to conduct independent research work and arrive at reliable findings which will contribute to the advancement of the profession. The proposed programme responds to the substantial demand for professional education in the Chinese language and its culture. This will also fulfil the needs for high-level human power in the current job market in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The programme learning outcomes are tailored to benefit both native and non-native Chinese, providing them access to present, as well as accurate and true knowledge and information on China: its history, philosophy, culture, language and literature. The knowledge gained can promote greater understanding between peoples and nations, leading to higher levels of peaceful resolutions to issues.

Entry Requirements

• A master's degree (level 7, MQF) in the field or related fields with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 or the equivalent, as accepted by the university Senate; OR
• A master's degree or the equivalent with CGPA below 3.00, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment; OR
• Other qualifications equivalent to a master's degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia; OR
• Candidates without a qualification in the related fields or relevant working experience must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the department; AND
• Chinese Language - a credit in SPM or a Grade B6 in UEC or HSK Level 5 (minimum score of 210) or the equivalent.
• International applicants must achieve a minimum of Band 3.5 in MUET OR IELTS 5.0 OR the equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR, High B1.
