2018 Marine Biology & Biotechnology Summer Exchange Program Held at XMUM
An exchange program between Xiamen University China (XMU) and Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) focusing on Marine Biology and Biotechnology was held from 28 July to 4 August 2018. During the exchange, a total of 15 students and 3 instructors from College of Ocean & Earth Sciences, XMU were hosted by staff and students of China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences (CAMS) at XMUM. Staff and students from both campuses interacted closely during the exchange program and collaborated in a range of learning activities.
As an introduction, the staff and students were first familiarized with Malaysian fish diversity through a visit to the local fish market, which enabled them to further immerse themselves through observing and collecting marine samples in coastal areas such as the Morib and Port Dickson beaches. Beyond natural habitats, they also visited the manmade wetland park at Putrajaya and gained a deeper insight towards the local animal and plant diversity. In particular, CAMS students were able to draw on their expertise from previous habitat visits to local coasts in their Marine Biotechnology undergraduate program courses, and take on a greater leadership role during these knowledge exchange activities.
Between the various site visits, students were also stationed in CAMS laboratories within the university. Under the guidance of staff from both campuses, students were able to identify the various species observed and draw a relation with the local environment. The exchange program was concluded with a poster presentation by XMU students, during which, the students summarized their knowledge and findings throughout the week-long exchange. In addition, many students expressed a newfound appreciation towards Marine Biology and Biotechnology, whereby theoretical knowledge could be applied via hands-on experience in field work.
Given the positive response, CAMS will continue to arrange various knowledge exchange activities in the coming future to enhance teaching and learning for both staff and students.
