School of Energy and Chemical Engineering Honors Exceptional Students of 202304 Semester

A total of 144 students from the New Energy Science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering Programmes were honored for their exceptional performance for the 2023/04 semester.
These high-achieving students were acknowledged for their remarkable accomplishments and earned their place on the Dean’s List, Merit FYP, and Capstone Project II Awards. The Dean’s List is an academic honour awarded to students who have achieved a GPA of 3.70 or above for the semester and fulfilled other requirements in terms of credit hours.
Excitingly, this year saw the introduction of two new awards generously sponsored by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and the Board Of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). These awards aim to spotlight the best final-year engineering students in Chemical Engineering and Electrical and Electronics Engineering programmes. Leiu Yu Xuan from 2019/04 intake received the BEM President Award 2023, and Valerie Oh Bei Yuan, was honored with the Best Final-year Engineering Student Award 2022 by IEM.
The Awards ceremony, held on 27 October 2023, commenced with a motivating opening speech by Prof. Chen Binghui, the Dean of the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering. The event proceeded with the distribution of certificates to all the award recipients, followed by an informative postgraduate briefing on Chemical Engineering and New Energy Science and Engineering Postgraduate Programmes by respective HoPs. Wrapping up the memorable occasion was a closing speech delivered by Prof. Huang Nay Ming, Head of the Department of New Energy Science and Engineering. The ceremony was attended by the award recipients and all the SECE staff.
Testimony from Dean’s list recipients:

Valerine, CME student, award recipients for 2023/04 Dean's List, Merit FYP, and Capstone Project awards (currently pursuing Master in New Energy Science and Engineering)
“Balancing academic studies, a final year project and a capstone project on the same semester was not an easy feat. After countless hours and dedications, these awards made me feel that my bachelor degree journey was truly worthwhile. There were numerous challenges to face and overcome within tight deadlines, but I truly believe that effective time management and well-structured study plan were the two main strategies that help me throughout my academic years.”
Leiu Yu Xuan, Recipient of BEM President Award for 2023 (currently pursuing Master of Science in Chemical Engineering)

“This award validates the hard work and dedication I have put into my 4-year journey in the XMUM CME programme, it also inspires me to continue striving for excellence. Balancing academics and extra-curricular activities requires self-discipline, time management, and determination. I am pleased that I navigated through all hardships and achieved a positive outcome.
“I view this award as a collective achievement shared with all the remarkable individuals whose paths have crossed with mine as our synergistic efforts have transformed into wonderful memories and a foundation of tangible accomplishments.”
Lee Shi Ken, 2023/04 NESE Student, Dean's List and Merit FYP award recipient (currently pursuing Master in New Energy Science and Engineering)

"Having had to retake a subject in my foundation year didn't stop me from achieving the Dean's list and receiving the Merit FYP award, proving that perseverance is rewarding. Despite occasional discouragement, persistence is worthwhile in the long run. Whenever exhaustion strikes, reach out to family, friends, or seek spiritual support; these avenues can guide you through challenging times.”
Wong Man Kei, CME student, 2023/04 Dean’s List and Merit FYP awards recipient

"Throughout the first semester of my final year, one of the most significant challenges I encountered was the task of balancing my individual final year project and the collaborative group capstone project. Both projects were demanding in their own right, requiring meticulous planning, effective time allocation, and exceptional organizational skills. This challenge exerted pressure on me, but it also served as a valuable learning experience."
“In overcoming this challenge, I sought professional guidance and advice from my professors, including my FYP supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun, and capstone project supervisor, Dr. Tan Peng Chee. Their mentorship, expertise, and support were invaluable in helping me navigate the complexities of my projects. Additionally, I was fortunate to have a strong support network, including dedicated lecturers, family members, and friends. Their unwavering encouragement and assistance played a significant role in my success.”
Shawn Loo Siu Lun, 2023/04 Dean's List and Merit FYP award recipient (currently pursuing Master in New Energy Science and Engineering)

“When you know there is someone out there working harder than you, you would know that life is not easy. You may need to work harder than most people to be successful. So, always be discipline in what you do. Don’t stop just because you had a bad day. Keep pushing. Don’t let failures demotivate you because the only place to go from failure is success.”
