Internet Pioneer Shares Insights on Cybersecurity in the AI Era

Published on June 15, 2026

From 13 to 14 May 2026, the School of Computing and Data Science (SCDS), Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), welcomed its Honorary Professor, Prof. Dr. Xu Rongsheng, for a two-day academic visit featuring a public talk and faculty engagement activities.

A highlight of the visit was his talk, "Cybersecurity in the AI Era", which drew students and staff eager to gain insights into the evolving relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity.

A renowned expert in internet development and cybersecurity, Prof. Xu Rongsheng is widely recognized as one of China's earliest pioneers in the field. In 1993, he established China's first dedicated internet line and launched the country's first web server, making significant contributions to the development of the internet in China. His achievements in cybersecurity research have also earned him the First Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In his talk, Prof. Xu Rongsheng examined how AI is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape and transforming both the opportunities and risks associated with digital technologies. Tracing the rapid advancement of AI applications, he highlighted their impact on the evolution of cyber threats and cybersecurity practices.

Describing cybersecurity as a "double-edged sword" in the AI era, he explained that while AI has enhanced connectivity, efficiency, and innovation, it has also enabled cybercriminals to launch increasingly sophisticated attacks. At the same time, he emphasized AI's growing role in strengthening cyber defense, particularly in areas such as threat detection, vulnerability analysis, and incident response.

Prof. Xu Rongsheng also discussed the expanding field of digital forensics and its critical role in combating cybercrime. Through real-world examples, he demonstrated how investigators analyze digital evidence to uncover malicious activities and reconstruct cyber incidents. He further highlighted how AI technologies, including large language models and intelligent forensic tools, are increasingly being integrated into investigative processes to improve efficiency and support decision-making.

The lecture prompted lively discussions during the subsequent Q&A session, with participants raising questions on cybersecurity trends, the practical applications of AI in security operations, and career opportunities in digital forensics.

On the following day, Prof. Xu Rongsheng met with SCDS faculty members for an academic exchange session. The discussion provided an opportunity to share research interests, explore potential collaborations, and strengthen connections between Prof. Xu and the School's academic community.
