CAMS Hosts Prof. Chua Thia Eng and Prof. Xue Xiongzhi for Academic Visit and Knowledge Sharing Session

On 10 April 2026, the China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences (CAMS) at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) was honoured to welcome Prof. Chua Thia Eng, a distinguished scholar and former member of CAMS International Advisory Committee, for a special academic visit featuring an inspiring knowledge-sharing session and book donation ceremony.

The highlight of the visit was the academic talk by Prof. Chua titled “A Life’s Journey in Coastal Governance: Navigating Towards the Sustainable Development Goals”, where he shared reflections on his remarkable personal and professional journey. From humble beginnings in Malaysia, Prof. Chua rose to become an internationally respected marine scientist and later joined the United Nations system, contributing significantly through organisations such as UNDP and IMO in advancing coastal and marine governance across the East Asian region.

During the session, Prof. Chua spoke candidly about the challenges and opportunities encountered throughout different stages of life, encouraging students to remain resilient, work diligently, and pursue meaningful goals despite setbacks. His inspiring life story and achievements deeply resonated with students and staff in attendance. 

Distinguished guest, Prof. Xue Xiongzhi, Dean of Fujian Institute for Sustainable Oceans at Xiamen University, also shared stories about Prof. Chua and how Chua, together with his UN colleagues, supported Xiamen City in integrated coastal management from 1990s, greatly contributing to the improvement of city’s habitability.

During the ceremony, CAMS Prof. Low Pak Sum, a former United Nations officer, actively engaged in the session by raising thoughtful questions and sharing words of encouragement, further inspiring staff and students through his own distinguished journey.

A meaningful Book Donation Ceremony was also held, during which Prof. Chua generously donated 200 copies of his memoir, “From Rural Beginnings to a United Nations Official: Challenges and Opportunities”, providing valuable learning resources and inspiration for the university community.

Following the programme, Profs. Chua and Xue was received by XMUM President Prof. Dr. Wang Ruifang and Vice President Assoc. Prof.Dr. Zhang Ying, discussing academic development, sustainability, and future collaboration opportunities.
