Media Prima Audio CEO Delivers Crisis Communication Insights with Communication Students

The School of Communication welcomed Mr. Nazri Noran, CEO of Media Prima Audio, for an engaging guest speaker session under the course COS303 Social Media and Crisis Communication. With over 25 years of experience in the Malaysian media industry, Mr. Nazri shared practical insights into crisis communication, reputation management, and navigating high-pressure situations in real-world media settings.
Throughout the session, Mr. Nazri reflected on major crises he has managed in his career. He also emphasised the critical importance of verifying information before sharing or publishing it, particularly in today’s environment where misinformation spreads rapidly. His message to students was clear and memorable: “If you’re in doubt, leave it out.” He cautioned that even minor inaccuracies can trigger extensive crisis communication efforts and damage an organisation’s credibility.
Students actively participated in the discussion, posing thoughtful questions about crisis response, media handling, organisational decision-making, and potential career pathways in the communication and media sectors. Their curiosity and engagement highlighted the value of learning directly from seasoned industry practitioners.

Communication Students Gain Industry Exposure at IPRM’s CHALK Session and Accreditation Event

A group of Communication students from Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) recently participated in the prestigious Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) CHALK Session & Accreditation Event held in Kuala Lumpur. Renowned for its strategic relevance, the event drew senior executives, managers, academicians, and communication professionals from corporate firms, multinationals, GLICs, GLCs, and SMEs.
Organised by IPRM to strengthen collaboration between academia and industry, the session offered students valuable insights into the professional standards and accreditation process for public relations practitioners in Malaysia. Through interactive dialogues with industry leaders, participants gained a deeper understanding of ethical practices, strategic communication, and emerging trends shaping today’s PR landscape.
A key highlight of the event was a thought-provoking presentation by Mr. Aizaz Azhar from the MIT Sloan School of Management, Asia School of Business. His session, titled “The Youth, AI & Comms: Are We on the Same Page?”, examined the evolving intersection between artificial intelligence, youth engagement, and communication ethics. The talk resonated strongly with the students, offering timely insights into how emerging technologies are redefining communication practices and professional values across diverse organisational contexts.
The student shared, “The session was truly eye-opening. It helped me see how what we learn in class connects to real industry practice.”

Advertising Students Visit Course Client for Communication Campaign Project

Students from the Advertising Programme under the School of Communication recently visited their course client as part of the Communication Campaign subject. Accompanied by their lecturer Dr Nur Widad Binti Roslan, the visit provided students with valuable exposure to real-world professional practice and strengthened the collaborative relationship between academia and industry.
The Communication Campaign course, offered every long semester, is a flagship module within the Advertising Programme. Owing to its applied nature, the course emphasises close engagement between students, academic staff, and industry partners. Through this collaboration, students gain hands-on experience in developing strategic communication solutions that respond to clients’ actual needs.
This semester, our course client is Dododots (Malaysia) — a vibrant skincare brand known for its innovative pimple patches, sold in over 50 countries worldwide. Dododots’ enthusiasm and commitment to collaborating with our advertising students stem from their belief in the fresh perspectives and creative insights that the younger generation can bring to the industry.
As part of this partnership, students had the valuable opportunity to visit the company, experience a guided tour of the company, and engage directly with the creative team. The session concluded with the presentation of a creative brief, challenging students to develop and propose campaign ideas within two months.
Beyond the briefing session itself, the company generously shared their expertise, experiences, and key learnings from their past marketing efforts. This knowledge-sharing session not only deepened the students’ understanding of real-world advertising practices but also inspired them to explore the industry with greater enthusiasm and confidence.

Mobility Programme Symposium for Students of School of Communication, Xiamen University Malaysia Successfully Concludes

On the morning of September 11, the Mobility Programme Symposium for Students of School of Communication, Xiamen University Malaysia was successfully held in Room 411 of the Journalism Building at Xiamen University. The event was hosted by Ms. Li Xin, Academic Affairs Secretary of the School. Attending the symposium were Ms. Liu Wanyu, Deputy Director of the International Exchange and Cooperation Office of Xiamen University, Prof. Su Junbin, Deputy Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication of Xiamen University, Dr. Chen Subai, Deputy Dean, Prof. Wang Changsong, Dean of the School of Communication at Xiamen University Malaysia; faculty members Dr. Zhang Xue from the Department of Journalism and Dr. Hu Yue from the Department of Communication; and over 20 outstanding students from the Malaysian campus. The discussion centered on topics such as cross-campus academic resource sharing, student development planning, and opportunities in the Southeast Asian communication industry.
At the outset, Ms. Liu Wanyu extended a warm welcome to the students on behalf of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange. She emphasized that Xiamen University has always regarded the cultivation of internationally minded talents as a key strategic goal, and that the establishment of its Malaysia campus marks a significant milestone in the university’s global engagement. Main campus will continue to deepen cooperation between the main and Malaysia campuses in areas such as academic resource sharing, faculty and student exchanges, and research collaboration, aiming to provide students with a broader platform for growth. She encouraged the participants to embrace cross-cultural challenges with an open mind and to create their own remarkable journeys in both academic and professional pursuits.
Prof. Su Junbin reviewed past exchange activities between Xiamen University and its Malaysia campus, noting that this summer camp not only serves as an important step in implementing inter-campus cooperation but also lays a foundation for the upcoming China–ASEAN 10+1 Conference on Journalism and Communication Education. He shared examples of Malaysia campus students who have pursued further studies abroad and encouraged more of them to continue their studies at Xiamen University. The university, he added, will integrate quality resources to offer strong support to visiting students and welcomes them to audit courses of interest to gain diverse learning experiences.
Speaking from the perspective of the Malaysia campus’s mission in international education, Prof. Wang Changsong elaborated on the significance of this summer program. He remarked that the Malaysia campus is committed to cultivating globally oriented talents, and this exchange with the Siming, China main campus provides an excellent opportunity for students to broaden their perspectives and understand the development of China’s media industry. He encouraged students to make the most of this opportunity, engage actively with faculty and peers, and use this experience to clarify their future academic and career goals while growing through cross-cultural exchange.

Dr. Chen Subai discussed trends in the field of journalism and communication, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary learning and practical skills. She urged students to stay attuned to the evolving media landscape and to explore pathways for integrating traditional journalism with new media.
Dr. Zhang Xue introduced innovative teaching approaches adopted in journalism practice courses, offering practical advice for enhancing professional competencies. Drawing on her own teaching experience, Dr. Hu Yue shared insights from courses such as Interpersonal Communication Psychology and Public Relations Practice, highlighting the value of cultural intermediaries in a globalized context. She encouraged students to transcend geographical boundaries and proactively seek international opportunities.
In the subsequent open discussion, students engaged in lively exchanges on two main topics: “Utilizing Cross-Campus Academic Resources and Planning for Learning” and “Opportunities and Career Preparation in the Southeast Asian Communication Industry.” They shared personal experiences and reflections, while faculty members offered constructive feedback and practical guidance on topics such as postgraduate study options, internship experience, and key skill development. Teachers encouraged the students to leverage Southeast Asia’s market advantages and their unique position at the intersection of Chinese and Malaysian cultures to carve out a niche in international communication.
