Ts. Dr. Haw Choon Yian & Team Publish in Advanced Sustainable Systems

The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates Huang Linrong, Liow Jo-Ey, Lim Kok-Loong, Tan Kar Woon and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Haw Choon Yian from Department of New Energy Science and Engineering, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering for their recent review article published in Advanced Sustainable Systems, an SCI Q1 journal with the latest impact factor of 7.1.

This is a collaborative research with external collaborators, including Prof. Dr. Khiew Poi Sim from the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus and Dr. Chiu Wee Siong from the Low Dimensional Materials Research Center, University Malaya. 

The project is financially supported by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (grant no. FRGS/1/2021/STG05/XMU/02/4), Xiamen University Malaysia Research Fund (grant no. XMUMRF/2021-C8/IENG/0044), and Hengyuan research fund (grant no. EENG/0033).

In the paper titled “Photothermal Assisted Interfacial Cleaning with Semiconductor-Based Sorbents: Recent Advances and Future Outlook for Effective Oil Spill Remediation”, the researchers delved into the transformative potential of photothermal-assisted oil cleanup for maritime sea surface oil pollution using cutting-edge photothermal semiconductors.

Through an in-depth exploration of emerging semiconductors like MXenes, transition metal oxides, transition metal sulfides, and transition metal selenides, promising pathways for enhanced oil sorption and removal from seawater have been uncovered. By harnessing solar-driven sorbents and leveraging semiconductor-induced temperature increases, these semiconductors manifested more efficient oil/water separation processes, mitigating the enduring adverse effects of oceanic oil spills on marine ecosystems and human health.

Haw Choon-Yian is an Associate Professor at School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia with an adjunct appointment in the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University. He also leads the Masters programme by research in New Energy Science and Engineering since December 2020.
