TCM Students Visit UMMC's Clinical Research Centre for Medical Ethics Learning

Published on July 14, 2025

A total of 39 third-year students from School of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) visited the Clinical Investigation Centre (CIC) at University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC), as part of their Medical Ethics course. The academic visit was led by Assist. Prof. Dr. Tan Hong Yien and Assist. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Shahzad Aslam.

During the session, the students were introduced to the role of CIC in managing clinical trials involving human subjects, particularly in ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP). Hanis Hafizah binti Ismail, Science Officer at CIC, also encouraged interested students to enroll in the upcoming year-end GCP training programme, exploring the opportunities to join CIC as a GCP certified researcher.

Zulaikha Syazwani binti Zulkifly, Head of the Research Unit at CIC, gave an overview of the clinical trial process, covering its different phases and post-marketing surveillance. The students learned about the facility's capacity to conduct a large number of sponsored trials annually, particularly in oncology research.

The visit also included a tour of CIC's research infrastructure, such as its clinical compartments, drug storage areas, sample processing lab, and temperature monitoring systems. It served as a practical complement to the students' classroom learning on research ethics and clinical compliance.
