CME Students Shine at Sustainability Challenge 2021
Two groups of students from Department of Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia won the Best Video Prize, the 3rd Prize and the Consolation Prize at the Sustainability Challenge 2021, which was organized by the Research Centre for Sustainable Process Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
With the objective of exploring and developing innovative ideas on sustainability, this competition asked its participants to submit a 2-page abstract along with a 3-min video presentation to present their innovative ideas towards a more sustainable future.
Team SCS, which consists of Sim Ley Boon, Chew Zhi Ling and Soh Leong Sing, won the Best Video Prize and the 3rd Prize in the competition with a cash prize of RM 1,500. Entitled “Green Valorization Approach for Durian Seeds”, their project is completed under the supervision of Dr. Kua Yin Leng from XMUM School of Energy and Chemical Engineering.

Team YMC Algae Tech, which consists of Jocelyn Lim Jean Yi, Chia Zhen Hong and Hong Mao Seng, was supervised by Dr. Tan Jian Ping. The title of their project is “Photovoltaic Powered LED-Based Microalgae System for Carbon Capture & Sequestration”. This group won the Consolation Prize in the competition and a cash bonus of RM 500.
