Published on December 30, 2024

The XMUM-IChemE Student Chapter organized a series of palm oil-related events on 28 November and 5 December 2024, in collaboration with a Chemical Engineering major course - CME443 Oils and Fats Technology.

An industrial visit to Profes Lipid Sdn. Bhd. in Semenyih took place on 28 November 2024, involving 40 CME students accompanied by Asst. Prof. Dr. Kua Yin Leng and Asst. Prof. Dr. Yee Kian Fei. Profes Lipid Sdn. Bhd., established in 2016, is Malaysia's first processing plant producing premium-quality red palm oil. This naturally red oil is rich in pro-vitamin A and vitamin E. The visit included an overview of red palm oil, followed by tours of the plant and laboratory facilities.

A week later, on 5 December 2024, an IChemE-POPSIG quiz competition was held at XMUM following a guest lecture. Ms. Anna Zulkifli from the Science, Environment, and Sustainability Division of MPOC was invited to deliver a talk titled An Overview of the Malaysian Palm Oil Industry. During her presentation, Ms. Anna shared the latest updates on local and international palm oil certification requirements, including Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO), the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Students and lecturers gained valuable insights into these certifications and their significance.

After the lecture, an online quiz competition was conducted by Dr. Kua Yin Leng. Participants answered ten multiple-choice questions related to palm oil, and five winners were selected based on their speed and accuracy. Each winner received an e-certificate of achievement, an IChemE-POPSIG goodie bag (including a lanyard and T-shirt), and a cash prize of RM 100, generously sponsored by IChemE-POPSIG. The winners - Sarwono Nelson, Hamdan Nadir Abdulbasit, Wong An Qi, Ooi Khim May, and Nathanael Gilbert Ariel - demonstrated exceptional knowledge of the palm oil industry.

The series of events concluded successfully, bridging academia and industry while providing CME students and lecturers with invaluable exposure to Malaysia's palm oil sector.
