XMUM Researcher Contributes to Gold Medal-Winning Project at ITEX 2026
Dr. Azmi Mohd Yusof from the School of Computing and Data Science, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), contributed to Semicon.VR, a virtual reality education project that won a Gold Medal at ITEX 2026.
Held from 18 to 19 May 2026 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, ITEX 2026 brought together innovators, researchers, universities, and industry representatives to showcase invention and technology projects.
Developed in collaboration with Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN), Semicon.VR is an immersive educational application designed to simulate the Front-End-of-Line (FEOL) semiconductor manufacturing process. The application allows students to experience key stages of semiconductor transistor fabrication in a safe and accessible virtual environment.
The project was presented to a panel of judges on 18 May 2026 and was later announced as a Gold Medal winner. The recognition highlights the project’s potential in supporting semiconductor education through immersive learning technology.
The multidisciplinary team behind Semicon.VR brings together expertise in artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, 3D modelling, extended reality technologies, and semiconductor manufacturing. The project aims to help students better understand complex semiconductor production processes through interactive simulation.
To further enhance and validate the application, the team has submitted a proposal under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS). Two research papers related to Semicon.VR have also been published, reflecting the team’s ongoing work in VR-based semiconductor education.
