XMUM Students Win Second Place in Malaysia CSR-SDG Competition
Students from the Communication Programme at the School of Communication (SOC), Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), won second place in Category A: Corporate Social Responsibilities and Sustainability Project Idea at the Sintok CSR Summercamp 2026 (SCSR 2026).
The team represented the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia Student Association, Xiamen University Malaysia Chapter (IPRMSA-XMUM Chapter).
Held from 12 to 15 June 2026 at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), SCSR 2026 brought together student representatives from IPRMSA chapters across Malaysia. Organised by the IPRMSA-UUM Chapter, the programme aimed to strengthen inter-university networks, promote community engagement, and encourage students to develop innovative solutions to social and environmental issues. It also explored how public relations practice could contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Representing IPRMSA-XMUM Chapter in Category A were Ang Jing Jie, Aryani Ananda Syifa Zakkiyah, Rahmadani Fajra Aqela, and Valencia Graciela, under the guidance of their advisor, Dr. Muhammad Nur Fitri Razak.
For the competition, the team developed a project concept addressing fast-fashion waste. Their proposed management system aimed to encourage more responsible clothing consumption and disposal through the collection, sorting, redistribution, reuse, upcycling, and recycling of unwanted clothing.
Under the proposal, collection points could be established at participating educational institutions or community locations. Collected garments would be sorted according to their condition and potential use. Wearable clothing could be donated or redistributed, while damaged or unsuitable items could be directed towards upcycling or textile recycling. The approach aimed to extend the life cycle of clothing and reduce textile waste.
A key feature of the proposal was its emphasis on public relations and communication. In addition to the physical collection system, the concept incorporated awareness campaigns, educational content, social media engagement, and community activities to encourage public participation and promote more sustainable consumption habits.
Developing the proposal involved researching fast-fashion waste, identifying challenges associated with clothing disposal, refining the proposed system, and preparing presentation materials. The students also conducted pitching rehearsals, using discussion and feedback to refine their arguments, anticipate questions, and improve their delivery within the competition's time constraints.
Each team member contributed to the preparation process through research, idea development, content preparation, presentation design, and pitching. The team also expressed its appreciation to Ms. Sivasangari Genapathy from the School of Communication for her valuable input and constructive feedback during the practice sessions.
The SCSR 2026 programme also included opening and networking sessions, the Youth Outreach: Seeds of Tomorrow community engagement activity, and a closing ceremony with prize-giving.
