Published on October 13, 2026

On 8 October 2026, Assistant Professor Dr. Nur Widad Roslan, from the School of Communication of Xiamen University Malaysia, received the Best Presenter Award at the 16th International Conference on Special Education in the Southeast Asia Region 2026, which was held in Bandung, Indonesia.

The conference was hosted by the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) in collaboration with INTI International University, Malaysia, and held in celebration of the 70th Dies Natalis of UPI. Themed “Advancing Inclusive and Resilient Special Education Ecosystems: Research, Innovation, and Cross-Cultural Collaboration in the Asia Region”, it highlighted research, innovation, and international collaboration in advancing inclusive special education.

Dr. Nur Widad Roslan presented her research entitled "Disrupted Discourse in Inclusive Education: The Impact of Decontextualized Media on Special Needs Awareness", which was co-authored with Normaliza Abd Rahim, from INTI International University. The qualitative study explores Malaysian parents' perspectives on how decontextualized digital media content, including "brain rot" videos and language, may influence communication, emotional responses, and behaviour among children with special needs. Drawing on in-depth interviews with five parents, the research highlights the importance of understanding how algorithm-driven content consumption may shape children’s communication experiences and awareness of inclusive education.

Dr. Nur Widad was awarded the Best Presenter Award at ICSAR 2026 in recognition of her research presentation and its contribution to discussions on digital media, special needs education, and inclusive communication. The award highlights the significance of her research in advancing understanding of the impact of digital media on children with special needs.
