XMUM EEE Undergraduate Student Co-authors SCI Q1 Paper
Research Management Center congratulates Assistant Professor Ir. Dr. Wong Shen Yuong, from Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) Programme, for her success in mentoring second year undergraduate student, Zhai Qingwei, to co-author the paper “Realization of Locally Connected ELM with DeepID for face verification”. The paper was published in SCI Q1 Journal- IEEE Access on 11 June 2019, with Prof. Dr. Yap affiliated to University Tenaga Nasional Malaysia as another co-author, and Associate Professor Dr. Li Xiaochao from Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) EEE Programme as corresponding author.

This research shows cutting edge method in the field of computer vision and image processing. A unique face verification framework was developed, which performs comparably well with the existing state-of-the-art deep learning architectures. The fast and straightforward framework overcomes the cost and hardware constraints faced by most of the existing deep learning algorithms, whereby powerful computers with super-fast processor and huge memory are now not required to run big dataset, especially for the face recognition and verification problem.
“This research belongs to an extremely competitive research field which is rapidly flourishing and advancing. It is very satisfying to claim new results that can be recognized by the global research community,” says Ir. Dr. Wong.
The team stated the significance of the research work:
“It aims at contributing to the knowledge discovery of the computer vision method that drives innovation in emerging Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. In recent years, we see great success in models built on top of AlexNet or similar CNN based architectures with backpropagation learning as a backbone. This time, we contribute to a different method.”
Ir. Dr. Wong is an Assistant Professor from Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, XMUM. She is a Professional Engineer (PEng./ Ir.) registered to the Board of Engineers Malaysia, accredited under the Washington Accord. She was recently appointed as the Editorial Board Member (Handling Editor) of the SCI Q1 Journal Applied Soft Computing, one of the world’s top ranked journal (ranked 20 out of 133 in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, 11 out of 106 in Computer Science and Interdisciplinary Applications, with JCR impact factor 4.873 in the year 2018).
Ir. Dr. Wong is mentoring 7 Electrical and Electronics undergraduates from XMUM, and 2 PhD candidates from other university. Her research interests include electrical power system faults detection and diagnosis, computer vision and image processing, machine learning, deep learning, pattern recognition, and other applications of artificial intelligence.
