The Innovation Center congratulates Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Wong Shen Yuong from XMUM School of Electrical Engineering and Artificial Intelligence for winning a gold medal at Research Innovation Commercialisation and Entrepreneurship Showcase (RICES) 2021 organized by Multimedia University. 

Her team members include Cheng Kin Meng and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Koo Ah Choo from Multimedia University, and Prof. Salman Yussof from National Energy University.

Entitled “ESS-IoT: The Smart Waste Management System for General Household”, Dr. Wong Shen Yuong’s project addresses the most significant issue of waste management, which is separation at source. Technology-based assistance such as the ESS-IoT assists people in better waste management, especially in waste collection and sorting. Moreover, an incentive mechanism using a cloud-based competition platform which incorporates the ESS-IoT is a good initiative for promoting environmental sustainability and tackling the problem of urban unethical and unmanaged waste disposal, which may negatively impact the environment.

RICES 2021 is a platform for the participants to showcase their latest inventions, innovations, and R&D commercialization achievements. This year, with the theme of Humanising Innovations, this virtual event received more than 100 participants from local and international universities, including those in the United States, India, Yemen, and others.

Dr. Wong Shen Yuong is now an associate professor with the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), Xiamen University Malaysia. She is a Professional Engineer (PEng/Ir) in Electrical Engineering registered to the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), a registered ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer (ACPE), a Professional Technologist (Ts) registered to the Malaysia Board of Technologists, a Senior Member of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineer (IEEE), Corporate Member of Institutions of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), and Accreditation Panel of Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC). Besides, she serves as an editorial board member for several journals. Her research interests include computational intelligence, fuzzy systems, machine learning, the Internet of Things, robotics, electrical power system faults detection and diagnosis.
