Seventh Convocation Held at Xiamen University Malaysia

On 20 and 21 September, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) held the five ceremonies of its Seventh Convocation for the graduating class of 2025, with more than 3,000 students, parents, faculty members and guests attending.
 

 

The Convocation Ceremonies was held in XMUM Auditorium.

Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Malaysia, YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang and Chargés d'affaires ad interim of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Malaysia, Mr. Zheng Xuefang attended the First Ceremony as the Guests of Honour. The Guests of Honour for the other 4 ceremonies are Mr. Novie Tajuddin, CEO of Education Malaysia Global Services, Mr. Lim Soon Huat, Group Managing Director of PPB Group Berhad, Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Guest Professor of Xiamen University, and Dato' Pua Khein Seng, Founder & CEO of Phison Electronics Corporation.

Xiamen Univesity President Prof. Zhang Zongyi came all the way from China to award the degrees to the graduands. Prof. Wang Ruifang, President of Xiamen University Malaysia, also took part in this joyous celebration.

XMU President, Prof. Zhang Zongyi, turned the tassels for the graduands during the First Ceremony.

This year, a total of 1,439 students from 20 undergraduate and 7 postgraduate programmes graduated from XMUM, including 833 local Malaysian students and 606 international students.

XMUM graduates are highly valued in the job market, favoured not only by Chinese companies and its overseas branches, but also by international companies seeking to expand in Asian market. Many of this year's graduates have joined industry-leading companies, such as Petronas, Huawei, Tencent, Amazon, Intel, Dell, Sony, BYD, CATL, EY, ICBC, Public Bank, UOB Bank, OCBC, Accenture, Roche, Top Glove, Touch 'n Go, and Genting.

For those seeking to pursue further studies in other countries after completing undergraduate programmes at XMUM, the university can serve as the steppingstone to some of the best universities in the world. Many graduates from the Class of 2025 have received offers for postgraduate study from world-renowned universities, such as University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, Cornell University, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, New York University, in the US; Imperial College London, University College London, London School of Economics & Political Science, in the UK; National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, in Singapore; University of Sydney, Australian National University, University of Queensland, in Australia; as well as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, University of Hong Kong, University of Tokyo, among many others.

Graduands celebrated this important milestone with family members and friends.

XMUM aspires to become a university with a distinct global outlook, featuring first-class teaching and research, and embracing cultural diversity. In September 2019, XMUM's first batch of 371 graduates received their bachelor's degree certificates awarded by Xiamen University. Since then, the university has produced a total of 7,741 graduates.

As of September 2025, XMUM has a student enrolment of more than 10,000 students from 48 countries and regions, such as Malaysia, China, Indonesia, South Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, United States, Canada, Argentina, Egypt, Zambia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka.

XMUM has built up an internationalized, diverse and high-caliber faculty team, with about 300 full-time academic staff, of which more than 80% are doctoral degree holders.

XMUM faculty members and students have produced 2,090 publications in SCI journals, including 1,144 publications in prestigious Tier-1 journals, such as Science, Nature and The Lancet. Among these, 461 papers are published by XMUM students, including 292 papers published by XMUM students as the first author. 9 XMUM publications have been selected as ESI Top 0.1% Hot Papers globally, while 106 XMUM publications were identified as Top 1% Highly Citied Papers globally. A paper with an XMUM master’s student as the first author was published in Science in November 2023, and this research project was later selected as one of the 19 Global Winners of the 2025 Frontiers Planet Prize.

 

XMUM students have actively participated in all kinds of national and international competitions, consistently demonstrating outstanding performance. Besides winning 1 Gold, 15 Silver, and 39 Bronze Prizes in the China International College Students' Innovation Competition from 2017 to 2024, this year, XMUM teams achieved remarkable success in the Southeast Asia Division of the same competition, obtaining 2 Gold, 6 Silver, and 7 Bronze Prizes. In 2025, one of our PhD students was the sole Malaysian recipient of the prestigious Global IChemE Award, receiving the Young Engineers Award for Innovation and Sustainability. In 2024, XMUM teams won the Gold Award in the International Virtual Competition of Creative and Innovative Idea, as well as the Grand Prize in the "Create for China" National Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.
