Seven XMUM Researchers Named World’s Top 2% of Scientists
Seven researchers from Xiamen University Malaysia have been ranked among the World’s Top 2% Scientists List created by Stanford University, US.
It includes Assoc. Prof. Ong Wee Jun and Assoc. Prof. Rashmi Gangasa Walvekar from School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Prof. Zheng Jincheng from Innovation & Entrepreneurship Centre, Assoc. Prof. Yeap Swee Keong from China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Miraz Mahdi Hassan from School of Computing and Data Science, Assoc. Prof. Kim Yun Kin from School of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Prof. Ong Chong Kim from Department of Physics.
Six researchers are listed under the single-year 2021 achievement category: Dr. Ong Wee Jun, Prof. Zheng Jincheng, Dr. Rashmi Walvekar, Dr. Yeap Swee Keong, Dr. Miraz Mahdi Hassan, and Dr. Kim Yun Jin.
Three researchers are named under the career-long achievement category: Dr. Ong Wee Jun. Prof. Ong Chong Kim, and Prof. Zheng Jincheng.
Dr. Ong Wee Jun and Prof. Dr. Zheng Jincheng are featured in the list for the third consecutive year while Dr. Yeap Swee Keong, Dr. Kim Yun Jin, and Prof. Dr. Ong Chong Kim for the second consecutive year. XMUM is pleased to have such gifted researchers and inspire global recognition for the university.
The study led by scientists from Stanford University has published a list comprising the top 2% of scientists in various scientific fields. The list was created by Prof. John P. A. Ioannidis from Stanford University and his research team. It contains a publicly available database of 100,000 top scientists that provides standardised information on citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator.

Below are the details of the 7 researchers:
Assoc. Prof. Ong Wee Jun is from the Department of Chemical Engineering, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering. He is also the Director of the XMUM Center of Excellence for NaNo Energy & Catalysis Technology (CONNECT). His research interests include nanomaterials for energy storage devices, photocatalytic, photoelectrocatalytic, and electrochemical H2O splitting, CO2 reduction, and N2 fixation.
Prof. Zheng Jincheng is the Director of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre at XMUM as well as a professor of Physics at Xiamen University, China. He has published more than 170 peer-reviewed articles in SCI journals with a total citation of over 6,900.
Dr. Walvekar Rashmi is an Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering. Her research area includes the synthesis of nanofluids, heat transfer enhancement, synthesis and characterization of single and hybrid nanomaterials, synthesis of application-specific deep eutectic solvents, waste tire devulcanization, phase change materials for thermal energy storage, etc.
Assoc. Prof. Yeap Swee Keong is the Assistant Dean of the CHINA-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences. His research covers Immunology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Natural Products, Molecular Biology, and Cancer Biology.
Dr. Miraz Mahdi H. is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Technology, School of Computing and Data Science. Apart from core networking domains including IoT and Cloud Computing, Dr. Mahdi’s research interests also include FinTech, particularly applications and legal aspects of blockchain and smart contracts.
Assoc. Prof. Kim Yun Jin is the Head of Programme of the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine. His research interests encompass the global burden of disease, clinical trials for complementary and alternative medicine, and neurology.
Prof. Ong Chong Kim is the Head of Department of Physics. His research interest included microwave measurements and characterization, neural sciences, magnetic materials and magnetism, spintronics, and quantum materials.
