Planting for a Greener and Better Campus

1176 trees and 3080 shrubs were planted in Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) on 11 Nov 2018, adding of greenery and vibrancy to the campus. 
YB Tan Kok Wai, Malaysian Prime Minister’s Special Envoy to China, launched the Eco-Green Awareness Campaign as the guest of honor and remarked on the importance of the event.

“Tree planting helps to restore greenery and beautify homes.”

“We can spread the idea of protecting environment and preserving forests through this tree planting event until one day everyone in our society is equipped with eco-friendly awareness, ” said YB Tan Kok Wai.

Prof. Wang Ruifang, President of XMUM, said that university students will play an important role in promoting eco-awareness.

“By involving in this activity, students not only develop eco-awareness themselves, but also exert an influence on other people. Green awareness is thus popularized throughout the campus, ” remarked Prof. Wang.

This campaign has attracted over 1000 public participants and 600 XMUM students and staff, assisted by 616 XMUM students as volunteers. Some public participants brought their whole family to attend the event, making it a parent-child activity. 

“I tagged one tree with my graduation year and major,” said Mr Lim Chee Wai, an alumnus of Xiamen University China who came with his wife and three children, “And another with the name of kids. Hope the trees can keep them company after they enter XMUM.”

Apart from the tree planting, XMUM students also prepared various exhibitions, flea market sales and fun activities to arouse people’s awareness for environment protection.
