Lee Yee Xuan: Everyone Deserves a Stage to Dance
Whether it is in the open space of B1, the playground, or the concert hall under the spotlight, their youth and joy deeply attract the audience, and their dancing shines brightly. The dancers are from Xiamen University Malaysia's Dance Club, one of University's most active societies.
The Dance Club has won "Most Active Performing Arts Club Award" and "Best Sustainable Activity Award - Kpop Random Dance" at the X-awards 2022 and 2023. Under the leadership of the new president Lee Yee Xuan, the team is growing, the activities are more diversified, and the stage is gradually getting better.
“Dancing is something I love and want to keep doing forever.”
For Lee Yee Xuan, on the stage, every movement is a kind of story, and every dance step is a soul exchange. Whether it is joy or sadness, dancing is the best way for her to express her emotions.
Nowadays, Lee Yee Xuan often sets aside an hour or two in the evening to practice dancing, which helps her relieve stress from her studies. She can often be seen by the swimming pool or dancing impromptu in her hostel room, finding a moment of peace and happiness.
“The pleasure and happiness brought by dancing allow me to find a moment of peace under pressure and leave my worries behind, which is also the important value of dancing in my heart.”
From starting as an intern Event Planner (EP) and becoming an official EP after a semester, Lee Yee Xuan has been quietly working behind the scenes. She is creative, dynamic, and always puts forward novel ideas and makes implementation plans, which also makes the former president aware that she has the potential to become a successor.
Taking over from the former president, Lee Yee Xuan continues the tradition and brings her own philosophy into the club's management: “I hope to make the relationship between the members of the dance club more harmonious and increase mutual understanding. At the same time, we also hope to explore different types of dance activities, so that more people can join us and feel the charm of dance.”
“My goal is to give everyone who loves dancing chances to dance.”
As a result, Kpop Random Dance, an event organized by the dance club, has blossomed throughout the campus. Chinese songs, Thai songs, English songs... The music starts, and anyone can join the team and dance freely. In the new random dance practice again and again, more and more students participate in it, just as Lee Yee Xuan believes that the stage should not only belong to the excellent but also belong to the soul of the passionate lover of dance.
In addition, in order to provide members with more formal classes, the club also gathers students with first-class dance skills to teach students, which can be divided into two types: beginner and advanced. The course of the beginner class focuses on the teaching of basic details, and the advanced course is more in-depth. As a member of the “Teachers” group, Lee Yee Xuan is happy and proud to see the new members progress from beginners to proficient dancers.
The dance club also invites professional dance teachers such as Nigel (choreographer, who used to be Zhang Yixing's companion) and Brendice (Malaysian hand dancer) to teach the dance experience and further improve the dancing standards of the students.
As president, she is worthy of the club; as a dancer, she is worthy of the stage. Her schedule is tightly packed, with almost no gaps. Immediately after the interview, Lee Yee Xuan hurried to the dance room to train with her friends who had been waiting.
Lee Yee Xuan thinks about the relationship between dance and her heart all the time. She believes that dance is not only an art form, but also a tool to promote interpersonal communication. In the process of dancing, people can express themselves more fluently and deepen their understanding of each other.
“I hope to convey the power of communication and unity to the world through dance. Dance is a bridge between people's hearts, allowing us to better understand each other and show our rich inner world.”
In the future, Lee Yee Xuan hopes to have her own dance studio, so that more people can understand the charm of dance, feel the joy of dance, and create countless stages with enthusiasm.
"On the stage I created, everyone has their place and chances to dance."
