2nd International Conference on Future Smart Cities Held at XMUM

Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) successfully hosted the 2nd International Conference on Future Smart Cities from 5 to 7 November, 2019.

In collaboration with International Experts for Research Enrichment and Knowledge Exchange (IEREK) in Egypt, an international institution that is concerned with the exchange of knowledge and enhancing research through organizing and managing conferences in all fields of knowledge, this event aims to bridge the research-industry gap and address key issues regarding effective sustainable living and development.

The conference brought together 168 full papers and abstracts from academics, scientists, industry experts and engineers from 49 countries including USA, Canada, Germany, etc. Topics discussed ranged from the development of cities, transportation, sustainability, architecture, engineering and computing techniques to the anticipated impact of such major changes on the environment. 

Selected papers will be published in the ASTI book series published by Springer, or in a special issue in Smart and Sustainable Built Environment published by Emerald Publishing. 

The opening ceremony was chaired by Assistant Prof. Dr. Xiao Han from School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and included a welcoming address by Dr. Zhang Ying, Assistant President of XMUM. This was followed by a plenary session by four speakers, including Prof. Jonathan Li from University of Waterloo, Canada, Associate Prof. Matthew Fineout from Carnegie Mellon University, Prof. Javier Aguirre Contreras from Autonomous Metropolitan University, Mexico and Prof. Yang Chenhui from Xiamen University China. A workshop about how to prepare and publish a paper was then conducted by Dr. Nabil Khelifi, Senior Publishing Editor from Springer, Germany.

The second day was packed with parallel sessions with 3 topics: "Smart Cities: The Development of Integrated Frameworks", "Smart Energy Adaptation and Resiliency Changes" and "Smarter Cities: Efficient and Sustainable Living". The final day included parallel sessions with the following themes: "Smart Mobility: Challengers and Solutions", "A Computing Perspective: Global Trends and Strategic Approaches", and "Smart and Digital Applications".

It’s worth mentioning that a number of XMUM undergraduate students from School of Electrical and Computer Engineering also delivered presentations on the following topics:
