20 Outstanding XMUM Students Receive 2017 Chinese Ambassador Scholarship
The Award Ceremony of 2017 Chinese Ambassador Scholarship was held at XMUM on 8 August 2018. 20 outstanding XMUM students proudly received the scholarship award certificates from H.E. Bai Tian, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia.
The Chinese Ambassador Scholarship was set up by the Embassy of People’s Republic of China in Malaysia in 2016 to promote China-Malaysia friendship and to encourage outstanding Malaysian students to pursue their study at XMUM. The recipients not only need to possess outstanding academic records, but also need to demonstrate active participation in social activities, especially activities that help to promote the friendship and goodwill between the people of the two countries. This year, after a stringent selection process, 20 students from 12 XMUM bachelor’s degree programmes has been chosen to receive this honour.
During his speech to student and staff representatives, Ambassador Hai Tian praised the rapid development of the university. “XMUM is the signature project of China-Malaysia cooperation in the field of education and is an excellent example of cultural exchange along the Belt and Road.”
He encouraged the students to live up to the motto of Xiamen University, “Pursue Excellence, Strive for Perfection”, promote mutual understanding and friendship between China and Malaysia, and actively participate in all kinds of cooperative initiatives between the two countries.
XMUM President Prof. Wang Ruifang expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Chinese Embassy and H.E. Bai Tian for providing continued support for the university. He gladly reported the latest progress of XMUM. Phase I project of campus construction has been completed, while Phase II project is currently under construction. Student enrolment has increased to 3,300, while expecting to exceed 4,000 in September this year. Prof. Wang reiterated XMUM’s commitment to build a multi-cultural campus and to attract outstanding students from diverse cultural backgrounds with generous scholarship offer.
After the Award Ceremony, accompanied by President Wang Ruifang, H.E. Bai Tian visited the teaching and research laboratories of XMUM’s China-ASEAN College of Marine Science and the newly furnished office spaces, providing a separate room for every full-time academic staff member.
