A Convergence of Poems in XMUM (1)

The final of “曦” (Sunlight) Poetry Recital Competition and the 2nd Poem Writing Contest were successfully held on 2 Nov, 2017 in XMUM. The event was co-organized by the Chinese Studies Programme and Chinese Language Society.

3 of the 39 first round participants of the poetry recital competition entered the final. Meanwhile, the poem writing contest received 78 entries from 14 different programmes, including both classical and modern poems. The participants contained students from Malaysia and China with enthusiasm on poetry writing.

The judging panel was consisted of lecturers from the Chinese Studies Programme and Journalism Programme. In the preliminary contest, Professor Lin Danya from Chinese Studies Programme expressed gratitude to the participants and encouraged further participation in poetry on behalf of the judging panel.

The award ceremony began after halftime. In the 2nd Poetry Writing Competition, Fan Haofu from the Accountings Programme, Li Yingyi from Financial Programme and Zhang Ke from Chinese Studies Programme were awarded the first three places. Their chosen poems are Xu Zhimo’s “再别康桥”(Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again), He Qifang’s “预言”(Prophecy) and Cao Xueqin’s “葬花吟” (Song of Flower Burial). Excellence Award winners are Khor Boon Yuan, Xu WenYan, Su YiXin, Jiang RuiZhao and Zhang HanZhi.

Meanwhile, Li Ruolin received the Distinction Award of the poem writing contest for her entry “它已到达远方” (It Reached Beyond). The Excellence Award went to Lim Sau Pui’s “世纪与昨日” (Decade and Yesterday) and Yap Wan Yee’s “我曾想象的一个女子” (A woman I’ve Imagined). Lim Miao Xiang’s “岛衣”, Wei Shuhan’s “如果此刻起风” (If the wind blows now), You Zongxiao’s “江南曲并序” and Li Yinqing’s “夏夏夏夏” (Summer) won the honorable mention. 

Some performances were also staged during the event. Zhu Lingyi from Digital Media Programme brought the song “大鱼”(Big Fish). Li Haohan, Lu Jing, Lin RangKun, Song Shangzheng and Wang Baoyuan performed the song “红玫瑰”(Red Roses) while Zheng Shangxin and Ni Zhihao from Chinese Studies Programme sang “大风吹”( The Big Wind Blows). The event ended with Rebecca Chung’s “被遗忘的时光”(Times that has been forgotten).

Teh Tian Jing, the president of the Chinese Language Society, expressed thanks to the committees and the president advisor Mr. Fan ZhiQuan showed his full support with a speech.

Prof. Wang Xiaomei, the Head of Chinese Studies Programme and the competition advisor, was very positive about the event: “Our contests enable audience to hear the sound of the poem, and see the voice of the poet. With the literature and poetry, we can build our spiritual homeland in XMUM.”
