Bridging Academia and Industry: A Postgraduate’s Journey from MBA to Finance Leadership

Background and Career Path

1. Could you please introduce yourself—your name and age?

My name is Lim Zhen An, and I am 25 years old.

2. What course did you pursue in your postgraduate studies?

I pursued a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).

3. What is your current job role, and what does it involve?

I am currently a Finance Executive at INTCO Malaysia. My job mainly involves preparing journal entries, creating financial reports, and conducting cost analyses.

4. What initially motivated you to enter this industry, and how did you get started?

I was inspired by the role of financial analysis in maintaining transparency and fairness in businesses. My interest grew stronger after learning about cases where funds were misused for personal gain. I wanted to be part of an industry where I could make a positive impact by upholding integrity.

5. How do you view the future of your industry—any trends or developments you think are important?

I believe the future of the financial sector lies in mastering the balance between independence and understanding management perspectives. Both are vital for achieving a sustainable equilibrium between business objectives and stakeholder interests. The industry also demands adaptability to evolving financial regulations and technologies.

Impact of Postgraduate Studies

1. How has your postgraduate education benefited your work or changed your perspective in your field?

Studying for an MBA has significantly improved my understanding of management principles. Through frequent communication and idea-sharing, I realised that problems often have multiple solutions, and collaboration is key to finding the best one.

2. In what ways has the postgraduate experience influenced or even reshaped your career goals?

It gave me a clearer understanding of effective management and how to create value for both myself and my organisation. It also encouraged me to consider further academic pursuits to deepen my expertise.

3. Have you worked before pursuing your postgraduate studies? If yes, how does your postgraduate studies impacted you after going back to industry?

No, I did not have work experience before starting my postgraduate studies.

Career Goals & Aspirations

1. What are your career goals after completing your postgraduate studies?

My primary goal is to join the management team of my organisation. I aim to use my knowledge and skills to ensure that the company is fully accountable to its stakeholders while driving its growth.

2. Has this experience altered your long-term career aspirations or ambitions?

Yes, it has. Initially, I aspired to become an audit partner, but now I see management roles, such as Finance Officer, as equally suitable for my career path.

Job Market & Opportunities

1. How prepared are you for the current job market, given your skills and experience?

I feel well-prepared. My current role has given me exposure to various aspects of accounting, from analysing transactions to understanding company operations and managing product costs. This hands-on experience is invaluable for career growth.

2. What factors are most important to you when applying for a job, such as salary, work-life balance, career growth, or location?

Salary is the most important factor for me. A low salary can make it difficult to sustain a reasonable standard of living.

3. Have you thought about working abroad, or do you have a preference for staying in your home country?

I am open to both options. My choice would depend on which offers better opportunities and long-term benefits.

Challenges & Concerns

1. What are your biggest concerns about entering the workforce after graduation?

My biggest concerns are whether the course I studied aligns well with job market demands and whether I will find a position with a fair salary.

2. Have you faced any challenges or obstacles in applying for jobs or making the shift from academia to industry?

Yes, one challenge is the need for practical experience. Another is adapting to situations where younger colleagues may have more experience than me.

Advice for Future Graduates

1. Do you have any advice for postgraduate students who want to make a meaningful impact in this field?

Stay focused on your goals and communicate actively with those around you. People you meet in the workplace can offer valuable insights and lessons that you won’t find in textbooks.
