Chemical Engineering Final Year Students Win First Place in IEM Integrated Design Project Short Video Competition 2023

The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates a group of Chemical Engineering final year students - Xu Xiaoyu, Teoh Jin Ye, Guo Xiaoxian, Zhou Yubang and their supervisor Asst. Prof. Dr. Yee Kian Fei - for being awarded First Place in the IEM Integrated Design Project Short Video Competition 2023.

The award-winning short video on Production of Purified Ethylenediamine (EDA) is based on students completed CME Capstone Project in their final year study. EDA is an essential precursor to chelation agents, drugs, and agrochemicals. However, due to limited local production and growing global and domestic demand across industries, local EDA plants need to reduce imports and meet rising demand. Hence, the process operating parameters should be optimized to maximize the profit potential and the purification process should be simplified to reduce the overall costs. This video introduced the application of EDA and market outlook, as well as the production process, material of construction, process control and instrumentation applied, previous accident analysis, plant layout, etc.

This competition was organized by the Engineering Education Technical Division (E2TD), The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM). This competition encourages all Malaysian Engineering and Engineering Technology undergraduate students to participate in the categories of Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical and Civil, based on the completed Capstone or Integrated Design Project in 2023. The submitted videos were viewed and judged by experienced capstone or project coordinators and industrial engineers.
