In April 2012, Malaysian government expressed its welcome to Chinese government for XMU to set up a campus in Malaysia.

On 21 January 2013, the Malaysian Minister of Higher Education officially handed a letter to invite XMU to set up a campus in Malaysia.

2013.10.4 

On 4 October 2013, in the presence of the Chinese President Xi Jinping, the agreement on providing all-round support for the construction of XMUM was signed.

On 3 July 2014, Groundbreaking Ceremony was held.

2014.10.17 

On 17 October 2014, the campus construction officially started.

2015.10

In October 2015, Certification of Completion and Compliance (CCC) was awarded.

On 13 November 2015, registration was approved by MOHE.

On 23 November 2015, at the Malaysia-China High Level Economic Forum, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang said that the establishment of XMUM “not only demonstrates the depth of people-to-people exchange between China and Malaysia, but also the openness of the Malaysian government and its people”.

On 3 December 2015, XMUM officially opened for enquiries as well as for receiving applications after announcing the launch of the university’s student recruitment.

On 22 February 2016, the Opening Ceremony for Pioneer Students was held at Xiamen University Malaysia.
