Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon & Team Publish in Science of the Total Environment


The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates Martin Wan Jianyuan, Phuang Zhen Xin, Hoy Zheng Xuan, and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin from Department of New Energy Science and Engineering, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering for their recent research article published in the Science of the Total Environment, an SCI Q1 journal with the latest impact factor of 9.8. 

This is a collaborative research with Universiti Teknologi MARA. Martin Wan Jianyuan and Phuang Zhen Xin contributed equally to this research as the first author.

The paper “Forecasting meteorological impacts on the environmental sustainability of a large-scale solar plant via artificial intelligence-based life cycle assessment” proposes a novel integrated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) framework to forecast the meteorological impacts on large-scale solar’s electricity generation and its life cycle environmental sustainability. The integrated LCA-ANN framework can evaluate the environmental sustainability of large-scale solar under different meteorological situations, thereby providing data-backed insights and management decisions to large-scale solar stakeholders to drive global RE growth in line with SDG 7 (to ensure access to sustainable energy) and SDG 13 (to take immediate action to combat climate change issue)

The integration of LCA and ANN via a combinatory approach to assess the environmental and energy performance of large-scale solar considering meteorological uncertainties

Martin Wan Jianyuan: It is indeed a valuable experience and learning process for me. In this paper, a novel integrated LCA-ANN framework is developed to assess the environmental and energy performance of LSS, considering meteorological uncertainties. The results are expected to provide data-backed insights and management decisions to LSS stakeholders and drive global RE growth. 

Phuang Zhen Xin: “Upon the publication of this review paper, I hope readers can recognize the influence of meteorological uncertainties on the electricity generation from large-scale solar technology, which is one of the pillar thrusts to drive the New Energy Transition Roadmap endorsed by the Malaysian government.”

Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon is an Associate Professor and Head of the PhD Programme at  Department of New Energy Science and Engineering. With a passion for sustainability, his research focuses on carbon footprint analysis, life cycle assessment, energy optimization, solid waste management, green building development, AI-predictive analytics and climate change modeling.
