Center for Postgraduate Studies and Research congratulates Phuang Zhen Xin, Lin Zuchao, and Assistant Professor Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin from XMUM School of Energy and Chemical Engineering for their recent article published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, an SCI Q1 journal with a latest impact factor of 9.297.
The first author, PhuangZhen Xin, is a master student at XMUM under the supervision of Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin, while the second author, Lin Zuchao, is an XMUM alumnus who is currently working for Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited(CATL).Asst. Prof. Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin is the corresponding author of this article.
Entitled “The dilemma in energy transition in Malaysia: A comparative life cycle assessment of large scale solar and biodiesel production from palm oil”,the paper uses comparative life cycle assessment methodology to compare the environmental impacts and identify the environmental hotspots of palm biodiesel (PB) and large scale solar (LSS) systems in Malaysia. This study also adopts a life cycle quantitative approach to investigate the greenhouse gas emissions from the land transformation of LSS and PB technologies. Policy implications are recommended to policymakers for better decision-making aligned with the national renewable energy implementation road map.

Phuang Zhen Xin: “Despite facing hurdles and setbacks, I really appreciate my research senior, Zuchao, and my supervisor, Dr. Vincent, for guiding me patiently throughout the research project. I would not be able to achieve this milestone without their continuous support and encouragement. I have gained in-depth knowledge about life cycle assessment (LCA) under Dr. Vincent’s supervision. Definitely, I was awed by the wide application of the life cycle concept in STEM and circular economy management during my research. Also, as a Malaysian, I am glad that my research could make a small contribution to the renewable energy sector in Malaysia. Hopefully, I can join more LCA-related projects in the future to sharpen my research skills and uncover more significant research findings."
Lin Zuchao: “I would like to express my special gratitude to my supervisor, Dr. Vincent Woon, and my peer, Zhen Xin, for giving me this opportunity to participate in this project. I would also like to thank them for their support and guidance throughout the research project, fromwhich I learned a lot about life cycle assessment, the environmental impacts of large-scale solar systems, and palm biodiesel. Finally, I hope this paper can contribute to the environmental assessment of renewable energy for large-scale solar systems and palm biodiesel.”
