A team from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), won the 2nd Runner-Up and Best Visual Distinction awards in the ENGINEER X MARVEX Ideas Competition: Pitch for Tomorrow.

Organized by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Young Engineers Section (YES), the event was held from 9 to 12 September 2025, at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The four team members - Lim Li Chuin, Lucas Ng Gao Jie, Goh Ee Xian, and Elise Ng Xue Yi -  presented their project "Chillacss", a smart solution designed to enhance energy efficiency in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems for indoor environments and won the Second Runner-up awards. The work showcased how technology can effectively reduce energy consumption while maintaining indoor comfort and sustainability, leveraging infrared (IR-based) occupancy detection features.

The students was supervised by Ts. Dr. Kang Chia Chao, the Head of EEE Programme, and supported by Dr. Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman, advisor of the XMUM Institution of Engineers (IEM) Student Section.
