2025-06-16

On 5 June 2025, students from the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) programme at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM), accompanied by Assistant Professor Dr. Chep Lee Lu Siang, participated in a field learning visit to local herbal expert Mr. Haw Ming Hock. The visit involved students from the 2402 and 2404 intakes and focused on exploring local plant resources and their medicinal applications.

During the session, Mr. Haw introduced the students to various herbs commonly found in the region, including Centella Asiatica (Ji Xue Cao), Bidens Pilosa (Qian Ri Hong), and others. He explained their natural growing conditions, key properties, and traditional uses in herbal medicine.

Students also had the opportunity to examine fresh specimens of herbs such as Houttuynia cordata (Yu Xing Cao), Andrographis paniculata (Chuan Xin Lian), and Oldenlandia diffusa (Bai Hua She She Cao), which are often used for their heat-clearing effects. The session helped deepen their appreciation for the practical application of TCM knowledge and the importance of local biodiversity in traditional medicine.

This experiential learning activity is part of XMUM's efforts to connect classroom knowledge with real-world practice. The university extends its appreciation to Mr. Haw Ming Hock for sharing his expertise and supporting students’ learning.
