On 19 October 2024, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) and Mango Media Malaysia officially launched the Mango Space platform, aiming to combine XMUM’s academic expertise with Mango Media Malaysia’s industry experience, offering an innovative curriculum designed for those interested in the new media sector.
As part of the launch, Mango Media Malaysia also introduced its Multi-Channel Network (MCN) business, providing incubation support for new media practitioners and content creators.
The event was attended by notable guests, including YB Teo Nie Ching, Malaysia's Deputy Minister of Communications; Zhao Changtao, Education Counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia; Lee Tai Hung, Deputy Director General of Tourism Malaysia; Prof. Wang Ruifang, President of XMUM; and Datuk Ge Yamei, CEO of Mango Media Malaysia.
In the welcome speech, Prof. Wang Ruifang emphasized the university’s role in nurturing media professionals with global perspectives and critical thinking skills. He expressed confidence that the collaboration would offer valuable learning opportunities for students and strengthen Mango Media Malaysia’s presence in the region.
Datuk Ge Yamei highlighted the importance of combining industry expertise with education to develop a new generation of media professionals. She noted that this partnership is not only about the project itself but also about building a stronger cultural bridge between China and Malaysia: “We aim to tell the Malaysian story with our voice, fostering greater understanding between China and Malaysia.”
Zhao Changtao, Education Counselor at the Chinese Embassy, emphasized that the collaboration merges education, media, and digital creativity, fostering cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Chinese and Malaysian content creators. He further highlighted the importance of technology and innovation in offering young students more global opportunities.
YB Teo Nie Ching, Malaysia's Deputy Minister of Communications, underscored the potential of high-quality content in raising Malaysia’s international profile. She expressed her hope that this collaboration would enhance cooperation between Malaysia and in various sectors, including media, culture, and education.
During the event, Datuk Ge Yamei and Prof. Wang Ruifang signed a formal agreement on the collaboration of the Mango Space project. Mango Media Malaysia also announced the signing of Malaysia's national treasure singer Shila Amzah as the first MCN creator and named her the “Mango Cultural and Tourism Industry Ambassador”. Shila will work with Mango Media Malaysia to promote cultural and tourism products from both countries.
The event also include presenting the "Outstanding New Media Creator" awards to eight influencers from China and Malaysia, recognizing their contributions to the media sector.
Mango Space courses will be offered at XMUM over the next four months, featuring both academic and industry experts. The curriculum will blend strategic planning with hands-on experience, tailored to meet the needs of new media practitioners.
